Change of Pace, or is it?

750 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Unknown Life, Unknown Dangers
Location: Starfleet Command. Earth.
Timeline: Day 1: 09:00hrs

William was sat in Admiral Mitsue's office waiting for her to arrive, he'd been shown in by her assistant and told to wait. Coffee or tea was offered, he gladly accepted a tea and then left alone. Moments later the Tea arrived and seconds after, the Admiral.

"Admiral." Hood stood cup in hand as she walked in and beelined to her desk.

Hood could tell something was up, wondered if he'd done something since he felt like he'd been called to the Headmasters office for a talking to. He stayed silent while the small Asian woman sat at her desk. What ever was bothering her must have been big.

"Thank you for seeing me at such short notice." Mitsue spoke looking up at William. "Please, sit." She offered him one of the chairs in front of her desk.

"Of course Admiral, what can I do for you?" William asked keen to know why he'd been asked here to see an Admiral of all people, wondering if his antics had finally caught up with him.

"I have a new assignment for you." The Admiral spoke as she handed over a PADD which it detailed the assignment. She watched as William read it.

William had to read it once and skim a second time just to make sure he was reading this right. Instead of what he expected as a talking to over his antics he was getting a ship. "Ascension Class?" William spoke. "Why give that to me, I could lay money on Admirals who would want that as a Flagship."

"It is part of the reason its being given to you. Some Flag Officers are distracted recently by the Dreadnought's arrival and the reassignment of Captain Havrelli, I decided that to put people back on track I would assign it to you and everyone can get back to matters at hand."

"Can I ask why the Captain was reassigned?" William knew that had to be a blow to any Captain that had this ship for a command.

"You can, but I couldn't answer it." Mitsue replied.

"I see." Well that answered that one. "Where is she?"

"In orbit at the moment undergoing resupply and maintenance." Mitsue replied. "She will be here for a few days at least, give you chance to get familiar with the ship, perhaps meet some of your staff. You would be missing a Chief Medical Officer but if you would like I can help you obtain one."

"I'll see what I can do, I've been meaning to walk around today so maybe I can stop by Starfleet Medical." William spoke.

"You will be on indipendant assignment for the next two weeks while you get acquainted with your new command, I'll expect an update in 7 days with your assessment of the ship and crew." Mitsue spoke.

"Any consurns Admiral?" William asked wondering if this was a lifeline to his otherwise stale feeling career or he was being given a run down to an honourable exit.

"No, but the crew is still loyal to Admiral S'iraa. He was the commander of the ship for some time and they grew close to him. The class is still somewhat of an unknown, considerations are being made if to continue the design or suspend production." The Admiral answered.

"I see, well I'll make my report as complete as I can for you." William spoke finishing the little Tea he had left. "If there is nothing else Admiral I'll get right into it."

"Just one more thing, I'd like you to do a review of the crew. If they have been together too long it may compromise the efficiency of the staff. We may look at breaking them up." The Admiral said as she looked at William.

William knew that breaking any crew up was a risky move, it was like tearing apart friends especially those that had bonded over time or through the flames of combat and loss. "I'll look into it for you."

"Dismissed Commodore and good luck." Mistue spoke before diverting her attention to other things.

William stood and walked out of her office where the assistant took the empty cup from him. She handed him several PADD's on which contained information he would find useful about the new ship, service records of the crew and information that would help him get settled and operational. He placed these in a provided bag which he slung over his back and walked out of the building to the Starfleet Medical Wing.
