The quarters were dark when Rebecca's eyes opened. Aimee was next to her still sleeping.
Rubbing her temples, and slit her feet to the deck, and felt a wave of nausea hit her like a boulder, and he stomach wanted to turn itself inside out.
Rubbing her neck with her left hand and the area around her eye socket she pulled on her uniform in the dark knowing the light would make it worse.
She looked back at the sleeping form of her daughter and sighed. She didn't want to wake her, nor was she up for carrying her down to sickbay.
Deciding to leave an open comm channel, between her and her daughter Rebecca set out for sickbay.
Squinting at the light from the corridor she realized it was later than she had thought based on the volume of crew moving about.
Well, this is just perfect Sandoval, she thought to herself. Late to your first shift. I wonder if I can get a doctor's note. Like high school all over.
She entered sickbay with one eye closed, and the second merely a slit. "Hello?"
"Hello." Xavier walked out of his office, the bane of the early shift. "Hello there. Dr Patrovski, Chief Medical Officer." Xavier could see the eye was a problem area. "What happened?" The start of any treatment began with information, what happened, where, how and physical effects. His arm out to one of the vacant biobeds to which is where he would treat her.
He felt it was better to introduce himself often because some of the crew on board were not from the Dreadnought and as such, he was an unfamiliar face.
She looked over at the other man still squinting, "Oh, it's nothing serious. Just a migraine. I've had them since my accident. I think it's called post traumatic? Oww..." She winced and closed both eyes. "Nice to meet you Doc."
"Lets get you something for the pain shall we?" He smiled. "Hop up for me. Seated or laying, which ever is most comfortable." He dimmed the lights above the bio bed to help ease the discomfort. He would look up her file in a moment about the accident. "Accident?"
"Shuttle accident when I was at the Academy," she said sitting on the biobed. "Grade 3 concussion, fracture of the c-3 to c-6 vertebra, and some internal injuries including bleeding." She said giving him the medical history. "I was told I was lucky. Both me and Aimee should have died."
Pressing a hypo to the side of her neck, the small hiss as the pain medication would almost immediately do its work. "These migraines, frequent?" He began drawing up baseline comparisons of his own while he looked at her records. The medical files were detailed, the damage was repaired. "Or they triggered by outside influence, stress, lack of sleep, have you been eating properly?"
"Not too often, but yes, all of that triggers them. I don't suppose I've been eating too well as of late. I skipped dinner last night. I have to admit this is already a stressful assignment."
"Are you assigned to the Indefatigable or the Dreadnought?" He was not sure if Rebecca was aware of the mixed crew while the Dreadnought was being repaired or she was stationed on board as part of the testing team.
She shrugged, "I was told Dreadnought, and now... well I'm here. So it's anyone's guess I suppose."
"Then we probably will return to the Dreadnought when we get back to Earth." He replied trying to be reassuring. Its stressful now because we kind of jumped on board this ship at the last minute.." Running some scans he could see where the issue was coming from. Loading another hypo he knew would help ease the source of her migraine and pressed it to her neck. "Well, you should eat properly, I see you are Chief Operations, last thing you need is fainting on the Bridge in front of the Commodore."
"Hasn't happened yet," she said with a smile. "Passing out, swooning or whatever it is you call it really isn't my thing. Just makes my eyes go cross eyed, and the pain makes me want to loose my lunch." She smiled embarrassed, "I know. How very lady like of me. And well as far as the eating goes, I'll try, but I'm not giving up my coffee."
"Oh, I'm not brave enough to stand between a woman and her Coffee, my Fiancee likes her Coffee. Food however, that I can do something about. I'm just going to take a blood sample." This he would use for a new record arrival since this was an assignment for her. Pressing the device to her arm and extracting a very small quality of blood he ran it through the scanner. "Records show you have a daughter, any problems there, food, sleep issues?"
She picked up a PADD from a nearby tray and downloaded her daughter's medical records that wouldn't be in the Starfleet Medical database. She's perfectly healthy. Only wants chicken nuggets. She's due her 6 year vaccinations, but other than that everything is normal. Not even any effects of being two months premature." She didn't say the rest. The doctor should have noticed already the Aimee's birthday coincided with the same accident that almost claimed her life.
"Tell me, why did you apply to join the Dreadnought? The ship has a bit of a history for getting into the thickest of things, A slightly more than average casualty rate than any other starship in the sector and by far the biggest once we return to her." Helping understand how a person thinks aids him in treating them by having a different perspective. It was easy for him because he'd been apart of the Dreadnought crew for a while, but he remembered his first months and how daunting they were for him.
"Senior Staff position was what sealed the deal," she said honestly. "I.... I well didn't do too well at the Academy my junior year. I was on Academic probation, and was nearly expelled. Luckily for me I have two of the best friends a girl can have... That and Admiral Yamamoto sticking up for me. Well, when I graduated third from the bottom, I had to take whatever position I could find. 3rd shift aboard a 100 year-old Miranda class in waste extraction." She shrugged, "Now, I have to prove myself to everyone. Including me."
"Well, you leapt into the deep end with his assignment. The Dreadnought is not your A typical assignment nor what she gets upto. Luckily for you though the crew are spot on so they are always able to help." The scans came through on the blood sample. "Iron, calcium, several vitamins, beta-carotene, sodium. To name a few." Clearly meaning Rebecca was lacking in these things. "I'll chalk it up to pre-assignment jitters, but I'll keep this on record for comparison when you come back in a month." Hinting that skipping meals and eating the right things were goals to make sure she achieves.
She shrugged, "If I have time Doc."
"Well, I suggest you make the time. The Commodore won't look fondly on members of his staff not taking care of themselves. If he can do it and hes the Captain, you can too." He reassured her. "Besides, its that or I send you to have dinner with the marines. Its not tasty, but you get what the body needs."
She shrugged with a grin, "I like MREs. My friend Kat is a Marine. Tougher than nails. Probably because she grew up in the Highlands of Scotland. But, I concede your point. Doctor's orders right?"
"Would I have it any other way?" He answered. "Ok, take this if the migraine returns." Handing over a hypo. "If it gets worse then come see me again and remember, eat." Then he began to clear up, treatment was done, all that was needed now was time.
"Sure thing Doc. I need to get back anyway, and make sure the portable holo-emitters are stable. I designed a holographic babysitter." She slid off the biobed and headed to the door. Pausing she looked back, "I'll bring Aimee by later this week so you can catch her vaccinations up, and you can yell at me some more."
"Just log a time that suits you into the system and one of the staff or myself will attend to it." He spoke. "Till next time then."
She bowed her head and was gone.
