Mission:
Under A Glassy Surface, Where We Don't Belong...
Location: Counselor's Office
Amélie glanced from the red headed woman sitting across from her to the chrono on the wall and back again. This session had already run longer than she had expected, thankfully it was a quiet day and someone else had been able to step in and take her next patient,
She smiled warmly at the other woman and nodded reassurringly. "Have you tried talking to him since we last spoke?" the counselor asked gently.
Katherine shook her head slightly. "No, I was going to, two weeks ago, after I saw you last." She sniffed again and ducked a hand across her eyes quickly. "I made dinner, I made pot roast, his favourite. I was going to talk to him after dinner, but then he called and told me he had to work late."
She sniffed again and shook her head. "I went down to Engineering to see him, I thought I'd surprise him during his break," this time the sniffle becamae a choked sob. "He wasn't there, they told me he finished early. He was meeting with someone." She leaned forward and picked up a tissue, running it across her eyes before scrunching it up in her hand. "When he came home he was so happy, he was laughing and happy, just like he used to be when we first got married. Do you think..." she choked back another sob. "Do you think he's seeing someone else?"
There was a soft sigh that escaped Amélie's lips as she shook her head slightly. "Katherine, that's not something I can answer," she said softly. "The only person that can answer that is Lucas. I'm sorry, as much as I want to be able to put all the pieces in place for you, the only person that can really do that is Lucas, you need to ask him for answers."
Katherine sucked in a shaky breath, nodding slowly. "And what happens when I ask him and he says says yes?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
The sympathy was evident on Amélie's face as she cast her gaze downward for a moment. "But what happens if he says no?" she asked gently. "No matter what, you can't do anything or make any decisions until you know what's going on. You need to sit down and talk to him."
Deep down, Katherine knew that the counselor was right, but as she took on the weight of the counselors words, her focus shifted slightly. "You're right," she said quietly, straightening her back and looking toward Amélie. She needed to know what was going on. The longer she left it, the harder everything was going to be. She needed answers and she needed them now. Of course, asking him wasn't going to be the way to get them. "You're right Counselor," she said as she drew in a breath and gave a watery smile. "I need to find out what's happening. Thank you Counselor."
There was something about the change in her demeanor that made Amélie feel uncomfortable. "Katherine, are you alright?" she asked, her voice filled with concern. "Do you want me to walk you back to your quarters? Or call someone for you? Maybe a friend?"
Katherine shook her head quickly. "No, but thank you, for everything. I'll be okay, like you said, I just need to find out what's going on. I think I might take a walk along the promenade before I go home, maybe get a coffee, it might help me clear my head."
Amélie smiled. "That sounds like a grand idea. I recommend you check out Katie's, she makes incredible cupcakes as well. I find cupcakes always make me feel better. Do you want me to schedule you in for two weeks again?"
Rising up from her seat, Katherine nodded. "Yes, please Counselor, I think that will be a good idea. I'll let you know if I need to come back earlier?"
"Of course Katherine," Amélie said gently. "If you need to see us earlier you know you can come back at any time. If I'm not available someone else will be able to see you."
"Thank you, and I'm sorry for taking up so much of your time." Without waiting for a reply, Katherine turned and walked out of the office. A cup of coffee and a cupcake sounded like a perfect distraction right now.
