An Unfortunate Truth

589 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Broken
Location: Counselor's Office

Amélie read the reports several times over, still not quite able to believe it. Lucas Warrington had been found dead on the holodeck, murdered. A welfare check on his wife, Katherine, had been requested.

Leaning back in her seat, Amélie looked over the notes from her last session with Katherine. The woman had been almost heartbroken with the state of their marriage. Amélie had suggested, again, that Katherine speak to Lucas.

Surely she couldn't be responsible for this? Could she?

Reaching up, Amélie tapped her commbadge. "Commander Caselli, can you please come to my office as soon as you're available? I need to speak with you about an urgent matter."

Bianca had just settled down with her coffee when the comm came through. She sighed, looking longingly at the dark coloured liquid in the cup. "I'm on my way Lieutenant," she finally conceded, setting her mug down on her desk.

Less than ten minutes later, Bianca stood outside the counselors office and hit the chime, entering once she was invited. "You wanted you see me counselor?"

Amélie looked up, motioning for the First Officer to come in. "I'm sorry Commander, I hope I didn't interrupt anything important."

With a laugh, Bianca shook her head. "Just my need for caffeine, it's okay, what can I do for you?"

Standing up from her desk, Amélie walked across to the replicator, ordering a hot chocolate for herself and a coffee for Bianca, handing the mug across before returning to her seat. "I got a request this morning to do a welfare check on Katherine Warrington," she said softly. "Her husband was..."

As Amélie's voice trailed off, Bianca nodded, taking a sip of the coffee. "Murdered," she finished simply.

Amélie sighed and nodded. "Commander, Katherine is a patient of mine. I've been seeing her every week for the past few months. She's been having some relationship issues with her husband..." The counselors voice trailed off again. "I would never breach patient confidentiality, but I have some concerns."

Bianca paused mid sip, studying the counselor carefully. "Lieutenant, do you have reason to believe that Ms Warrington might have something to do with her husband's death?" she asked quietly.

With a slow nod, Amélie looked up and met the First Officer's gaze. "She suspected her husband was unfaithful. She was hurt by him and very angry with him. I had been trying to suggest that she speak with him about her concerns, when she left she intended to confront him. I.. I don't know what happened after that, but now he's dead."

Bianca nodded slowly. "I see," she said quietly. "Lieutenant, I'll need you to forward any relevant files to me. I'll assess them. If I think there's any merit to it I'll speak to Security. In the interim, how about we assign another Counselor to Katherine and make sure all sessions are recorded?" Bianca suggested.

Amélie nodded slowly again. "Of course Commander, I can do that," she said. "Again, I'm sorry to bother you, I just felt it was worth raising."

Finishing her coffee, Bianca offered a reassuring smile. "Counselor, my door is always open, especially when it comes to important matters like this. I'll let you know what happens."

With a smile, Amélie stood up. "Thank you Commander, I appreciate your time."

Bianca nodded, leaving her mug on the desk as she stood up and headed toward the door. This whole situation just took another giant leap into a deeply disturbing situation.
