A New Beginning

Posted on Mon Feb 13th, 2023 @ 8:16pm by Lieutenant Cassian Massy

671 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Ethics, Morals & The Prime Directive.
Location: En Route to U.S.S. Dreadnought
Timeline: MD1: 07:00 Hrs.

Cassian had read his orders time and time again, he couldn't believe how fortunate he was but also the task that lay before him. He was expecting to be reassigned to some relatively insignificant deployment, routine, mundane but when he found out he was being transferred to the very ship that was in orbit and creating such a scene on the planet below....Surprise.

There were 9 other officers on the shuttle with him all of which were assigned to the hulk of a ship before them. Eager voices, the energy was almost electric but for Cassian it was reserved, tempered by experience and past disappointments, hopes crushed.

There were times when he'd listen in to those around him and wonder where that spark went in him. There were Lieutenants on board that were younger then himself and there he was, 30 years old and a Lieutenant. He dreaded to think that perhaps this was where he peaked, this was the extent of his career in yellow but at this stage, it was too late to branch transfer. He could only hope that looking upon the large vessel that continued to grow ever larger in size that this was his chance, his opportunity to grow himself.

"Landing in two minutes, take your seats please." The pilot spoke over his shoulder.

Mumbles and groans later as people realised that viewing time was over and it was back to it. From his own seat he could see the right side of the window facing forward, the hull of his new home filled the view he had even as the pilot shifted the flight path a little. From what he could see they would be landing in one of the starboard axis hanger bays. One of many apparently the ship contained. Light filled the interior of the shuttle as it passed the shield barrier and made a smooth landing.

"Everyone remember to report in when you disembark." The pilot spoke as the rear door slowly opened.

Cassian was the last to leave, taking in the view around him as he stood upon the lip of the hatch seeing shuttle and runabout alike in rows, scores of people moving about with purpose, drive and zeal. As he walked along the path indicated by markings on the floor leading the way around he was accidentally shoved lightly by a passing Ensign. Apologetically they smiled at him but not for one moment did they break pace to where ever they were going. Cassian smiled, the youth of today, were always in a rush, but in rushing, it was often hard to see where they were going.

He walked to an officer in red, a Lt.Commander with a PADD in hand and a line of uniformed individuals. Clearly this was the check in point before they would be permitted to board the ship. His wait was brief but as he came to be next he stepped up. "Lieutenant Cassian Massy." He placed his hand on the reader which verified his identity. "Chief Operations Officer."

The officer gave him a look, a mere Lieutenant, a senior staff position, on a ship like this? A quick check confirmed all the details, name, rank and position to boot.

Cassian was handed a PADD which contained on it details of his quarters, where his department was located, and other duty-based information. A note also to report to the Captain at some point now that he was on board.

"Next."

The walk to his quarters where he would be able to drop off his small shoulder bag took almost 15 minutes as he had to work through the scores of people and engineering teams all steaming on to prepare the ship for departure. He even had to wait for a 3rd Turbolift before the prior two were full. His fingertips rapped against the PADD he held, his future literally within the palm of his hand and he could only wonder while he waited.

He didn't have to wait long before another Turbolift opened its doors.
