Ships compliment: 7861

Posted on Tue Sep 3rd, 2024 @ 1:56pm by Lieutenant Aaron Byrne

808 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Ethics, Morals & The Prime Directive.
Location: Sickbay- Chiefs office
Timeline: Slight backpost

"Computer, record into the ships log that upon this date the crew compliment of the Dreadnought increased by one. Baby girl Frost, born at 1400 hours precisely. Birth has been registered to the records of Dr. Acacia Thomas, Lieutenant Starfleet and Colonel Jason "Jack" Frost, Marine Corps. "

Aaron was not sure what he had expected, when he had come aboard the Dreadnought. He hadn't known that Acacia was pregnant when she asked him to come aboard. They were old friends, but he hadn't expected the family like atmosphere that he would come into. Delivering her child had been a kind of anxiety that he'd never felt before, she was closer to a sister than she was anything else to him, but the feelings.

Feelings are funny things He mused to himself and continued.

"Please notify the captain, of the typical familial bonding time, barring emergency, of 48 hours."

Aaron hoped that they would get that bonding time, as the Colonel looked a little stunned when he'd handed him the blanket wrapped baby girl. If he didn't miss his guess, he was now torn between the two ladies in his life as to which one he was more devoted to. The expression on his face throughout the delivery had been telling, and a window into the man that he'd been honored to witness.

Makes me want something like that for myself. A family is feasible here, on board a ship the size of this. I want...a connection He'd seen unlikelier pairings than Acacia and Jason and they seemed to be making it work.

"Labor commenced mid-surgical procedure with the breaking of the waters. See this MD's OR note where he took over that procedure. Dr. Thomas temporarily handed over the position of Chief Medical Officer at that time to myself. Labor proceeded slowly. Acacia repeatedly refused any analgesic medications, stating "She needed the full experience...and that she'd earned this pain. " Attempted to dissuade patient from this course of action but she was adamant. At 46th hour of labor, 10 cm of dilatation was present and the child remained at 0 station. Some significant deceleration in the baby's heart rate had been present at the end of active labor, but increasing to include the period of time before the contractions. Medical assistance for the delivery of the child discussed with both parents. Acacia been unwilling to push with contractions without the presence of Colonel Frost. A runner was sent to the marine deck at 1205. The Colonel arrived with some haste, and there was an immediate improvement of patient's mood."

That had been something of an understatement, and he'd been hard pressed not to weep at her joy in seeing him. It wasn't something that one was unaffected by. He envied the depth of her love for the Colonel.

I hope you appreciate her. I've loved her like a sister for years, but you have something...special.

"Crowning occurred at 1337, with the delivery of the head at 1340. Nuchal hand was present. Baby girl was delivered at 1400. Baby girl appeared healthy, APGAR of 8 and 10. Crying appropriately after stimulation. Newborn check to follow in separate report. Normal appearing confirmation, though this MD has personally never seen a hybrid Aldean human child. No hybrids of this type exist in the Starfleet Medical database. Primary record has been initiated with Starfleet medical, with a note to Dr's Montressor and Mulchaye and their special interest in the Aldean condition. Make a note to request physiological information from the custodian of Aldea. ".

There was the appropriate beep, where the computer registered that as an actual note and wood transmit it to his desk during his next down time so that he could in fact request that information. Their computer needed to have it, for safety sake but he suspected that Acacia would also want that information for her own personal use.

He paused for a moment in His report, tapping a pattern onto the table with his stylus.

"Bleeding exceeded the normal. Patient was moved to the bed for appropriate countermeasures. One unit of cross matched blood transfused, with simple crystelloid resuscitation. Placenta delivered. Placenta intact with appropriate arterio-venous conformation of umbilicus. Small area, approximately 5% of the surface area of placental infarct on the lateral side. Infarct appeared superficial and did not appear to affect blood supply to the baby.

"Mother and Baby are resting in Maternity, to monitor the health of both. End log- Signed Dr. Aaron Byrne Lieutenant Starfleet. Acting Chief Medical Officer USS Dreadnought."

Sagging into his seat, he winced at the sheen of sweat that still was on his forehead and the faint odor of unwashed human that lingered in the air.

"Computer, register me as off duty and begin Delta shift."

"Transfer complete. Delta shift signed on, Dr. Pravolovich commanding."

"Good, because I need a shower something terrible."
