1,160 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Let That Be Your Last
Location: Sol-3 (Earth): Hawaii

Samanthia moved through the house that was her parent's home. They had taken off on a trip and left the house to them that overlooked ocean. Celena had gone on ahead back to Archon IV with valuable experience in dealing with different species and their cultures. Even when she stepped on a few toes and even one that would've gotten her thrown off planet if it weren't for Samanthia's timely intervention. Only repercussion that came from that, Celene was barred from the site. She spent the rest of the week on Cait helping to look after Mariah. Not a befitting way to start your career off as an archeologist.

She sighed as she leaned against the counter, looking out the kitchen window at the garden. She could see Mariah happily running around the yard with a few friends of hers. She smiled remembering back to the time her twins were just as happy with each other back on SB-12.

"Maybe this was a good idea to stop here..." She whispered more to herself than anyone nearby. She was glad that her parents had retired from service and was here for some parent child time. To unburden herself with the loss of her previous family. To be able to start fresh with a new family.

"Where is that big lug of a mate o mine?" Turning to from the view of Mariah playing happily with her friends. She padded off on bare feet, heading through the house on one chore or another.

S'er'in'e was in the Bedroom putting clothes away that had finished washing and drying, now that they were free from sand. His keen ears could hear the children playing in the garden, the laughter, the joy and happiness. It made him pause as he thought back to his own youth and he couldn't recall a single moment when he laughed with others his age. Everything was strict, formal, there was nothing social about his upbringing but only culture and expectation. If things were different he wondered how he'd turn out like, he wondered if he had the joys and freedoms Mariah did would he be the statue of tradition, culture and expectation that he is today.

It was nice to have a Mate that was willing to help with domestic chores, leaving her with plenty of time to plan the next steps of her life. She had graduated from Archon IV with honors a long with Celene and a few friends from the Archon IV University. Entering the their shared bedroom, Samanthia smiled. Becoming more familiar with S'er'in'e, she could pick nuances in body posture and subtle movements that he was reflecting on something important to him. "Kitty treat for a thought?" She spoke loud enough to be heard, yet not to startle him. After all he was an oversized bipedal predator civilized at least. "Or full body brushing?"

Tilting her head to the side, knowing he loved to receive them, since she had introduced him to the full body brushing.

"I was thinking about our daughter." S'er'in'e replied. "I was listening to her laugh and filled with joy and think back to my own upbringing that was devoid of such things. Duty and honour, status and expectations filled my youth yet when I think back upon it, it's not the life I would wish for our daughter." He turned to face Samanthia.

"The Homeworld would accept her true, but I know, as do you, she would be in some ways viewed an outsider. While I do not wish to deprive her of the wonders the Homeworld has, I do not wish to see her endure the stigmatism of not being a pure bred Caitian. I would see her with a smile on her face, a flower in her hair as you have done in the past. While she will be an Elder one day as you are, I want her to have and enjoy the freedoms that I did not have in my youth."

Samanthia moved next to S'er'in'e, looking out the window at their daughter laughing with friends, speaking softly as she turned back to S'er'in'e. "Same..." Pausing to gently enfold him in a hug not to upset his balance. "I know the feeling. Accepted for whom your linage is. What you can bring to the group, etcetera etcetera... Not for who you really are inside that makes up who you are." She smiled, "At least she has two loving parents who will let her decide her future when she's an adult. Caitian way or the stars..." Giving him a full body press hug, listening to his deep soft rumbling of a purr. "We'll teach her both her heritage. And it something to be proud of."

S'er'in'e held Samanthia firmly, his two large arms around her frame, his tail about her waist, his head gently resting atop hers. It was peaceful moments like this that he most enjoyed, his Mate in his arms enjoying the view of their daughter laughing and enjoying herself. "I hope she is like you as she ages. Your patience, understanding, willing to accept challenge and stand up for herself." He spoke. "You were patient with me when our union started and I needed to learn your ways. You accepted the challenge of my ways and you stood up for yourself when our union was threatened."

"So do I," Samanthia spoke softly. "And ferocity of a predator when needed as you have displayed. Knowing the right amount of force when doing so." She loved the softness and warmth of his fur and him. "I've started teaching her human martial arts of unarmed combat for her protection when we can't be there to assist her." Leaning back, out from under his muzzle to look up at him. "I'd like you to teach her the Caitian way of fighting also. With weapons and without."

A sadness flashed across her expression, remembering the dark times in her life, when violence ruled supreme. Even in the midst of life at its brightest moments.

"As my Mate wishes." S'er'in'e replied as he held his Mate. "If you would like, we could request an instructor at the appropriate time from the Homeworld for her education?" He suggested knowing that from an instructor her education would be far superior to his own teachings.

Samanthia looked thoughtful. "Sounds good." Smiling, looking up at him with warmth. "I may attend also. I'm getting a bit flabby from all this luxury." Looking him over. "It wouldn't hurt you to take a few refresher courses also?"

"You....are not flabby." S'er'in'e spoke as he cuddled her close to him, nibbling lightly on her neck. "You are perfect in my eyes." Though it made him wonder if the slight weight gain he'd suffered was unappealing to her.

Samanthia smiled at his words, giving him a hug. "Much appreciate the vote of confidence." Relaxing against him, enjoying the moment. "I'm still gonna still attend the lessons."
