Meet and Greet

Posted on Fri Feb 24th, 2017 @ 4:15pm by Colonel Jason "Jack" Frost

1,422 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: New Faces and Terror Beyond
Location: XO's Office

Having checked the roster and found out who was the Executive Officer on the Dreadnought, BJ groaned. A Marine she muttered mentally. I hope he doesn't have a inferiority superiority complex and think that Marines are better than Security. She finished braiding her long brunette hair in a single braid going down her back and went to finish getting dressed.

She put her uniform on and made sure her rank pips were polished before she put them on her collar, pulled her uniform jacket down, retrieved a PADD with her orders on it and headed out of her quarters. Once she entered the turbolift, she took a moment to clear her thoughts of Marines versus Security and explain why she arrived the way she did.

Outside of the Executive Officer's office, Lieutenant Commander Billie Jean Reign pressed the chime and awaited to be granted permission to go in.

Jack had the morning shift so was already in the office almost shoulder deep in reports, PADD's and other information that was coming in from all the other departments. Reports of the attack flooded in as statements were taken, equipment logged as returned or lost, casualty reports. "Yes, come." He called finishing the last of an hour old cold Coffee.

BJ entered the office and saw the number of PADDs on his desk and the cup of coffee near his hand. She estimated that he had been in the office longer than most people who were just starting Alpha Shift and made a note to keep the meeting as short as possible. "Lieutenant Commander Billie Jean Reign reporting for duty, Colonel Frost," she said as she handed the PADD with her transfer orders on it.

Jack had a look at the PADD, no point in introducing himself as it seemed she'd done some homework. "Sit." The typical marine offer of a chair. "Our new Chief of Security." Jack was surprised about this one, the Captain had said nothing to him about it. Could be something to do with the Bawdens. "Interesting pick of the bunch Commander. Why here?" The Dreadnought was hardly the run of the mill, always finding trouble and always taking some losses.

"I like a challenge, Colonel," BJ said as she took the offered seat, even though he had used the word sit as if she were a dog. She filed that note aside and looked at him. "The Dreadnought is a fine ship and has an interesting story. I think my coming aboard has already added to it."

"Well you will get the challenge, Captain Havrelli is an interesting individual and this ship has a colourful history across its classes. I heard about your incident getting on board, has medical cleared you from pre-assignment medicals?" Jack asked, might as well follow the book since he was Acting First Officer. Otherwise he wouldn't have cared much as long as the job got done.

"Not yet, but Doctor Patrovski reminded me of it last night when he came to do a check up on me and cleared me for duty, Colonel," she said. "If I had known I was going to be transported into mid air, I would have tucked and rolled."

"So just how are "Miss Current Events' are you?" Jack asked that way he'd be able to fill in any blanks she had and extras where needed. If she was going to be CSec shed need to know alot.

"There's a lot of 'current events', Colonel," BJ said. "Which current events are you referring to? The new type XII phasers? The upgrades for different types of ships? You have to be a bit more specific, Sir."

"Ok then." Jack sat back. "Ayla and Mark are on a bit of leave time, they recently lost Marcie, one of the daughters. Ayla is the First Officer I'm filling in for, Mark I'm guessing is going to Tactical because he used to do Security too. Captain Ra Havrelli is mostly an unknown to us as this is his first mission with us since he took command. So far he seems by the book type but he's made some creative choices recently so jury is still out on him." Jack gave a pause before resuming.

"Ayla and Xavier are at slight odds, she offered him CMO and Lt.Cmdr and he turned it down, what followed was not pleasant. Fella can have a surprisingly big spine when he needs it and whatever you do, don't cross into his territory, he doesn't take well to it. If he can talk down the Admiral and get his way, hes cemented that here with anyone else. He's not seeing anyone, at least not that I know of." Jack smiled. "We have Lt. Luthar, our CAG. Wild boy pilot but a good one, dating one of my marines." I was happy for Amanda, but eh about Zan. Sometimes I felt she could do better.

I went through the rest of the staff as I knew it, detailing everything I could think of.

For a moment, BJ was confused by the use of all the first names and took a second to place last names and current ranks to them

She started to ask a question, then realized he was talking about Xav and focused on that. "I spoke with Doctor Patrovski about the fact that he should have that spot due to his time aboard, but he seemed a bit reluctant to talk about it. I also noticed that he doesn't like anyone questioning his orders he gives in Sickbay."

"Found out the hard way huh?" Jack smiled. "We have tried to get him to take the role and the rank but hes turned it down." He spoke. "Any questions?"

"I have a few of those," BJ said. "What's the current mission and Security's specific place in it?" she asked him.

"Currently we are in orbit of a remote colony, initially we didn't know of its existence but we were sent to monitor why it's suddenly become geologically unstable." Jack explained. "As of right now we are evacuating the aid station we set up there because the locals attacked, we don't know why yet but early reports indicate some casualties amongst both sides." Jack slid a PADD over to her detailing the situation.

"We also have a ship in system trying to approach under stealth, ships sensors picked it up. The Captain launched two probes towards each planet in a ruse to enhance sensor resolution and also better track the ship. If detected by the probes they will have to destroy them or leave the system. The Captain isn't looking for a fight but is prepared for one."Jack added.

BJ nodded. "And where do you have Security at in this effort, Colonel?" she asked him since he didn't answer her question.

"Some are on the surface providing security for the compound, the marines are off doing perimeter security against aggressive wildlife since the instabilities forced the locals into the hills where they nest." Jack answered. "Most of the security detail is still on board."

"I'll put together a team," BJ said. "I spent most of yesterday going through personnel files for Security," she said. And the rest of the senior staff she added mentally. "I'll need a half an hour, Colonel." She made a mental note to check the scans of the area surrounding the compound with terrain maps. She wished she had had a chance to check out the armory, but felt she could assemble enough kits for a small, heavily armed force.

"You are not going down there. I admire your eagerness but the Doctor has not cleared you for preapp, until that's done you are staying here." Jack spoke. He wanted to be down there himself but as First Officer he had to obey the rules of the position, which meant enforcing them.

She restrained a retort and sighed inwardly. "I'll head to see him immediately after here, Sir. Then I'll ask him to forward it to you once I clear so I can assemble a team."

"Then I won't keep you any longer." Jack said allowing her to leave. It was good she was eager but Jack had yet to read the latest reports about the evacuation, they were sitting on his console on his table waiting to be read.

"Thank you, Sir," BJ said as she turned and headed for the door. She had a Doctor to meet and plans to make.
