Eliminating a Threat

555 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Unknown Life, Unknown Dangers
Location: Weapons Range of Civic

Hood was in his Ready Room talking with Admiral Mitsue about the situation and how it had developed. With so little information to give it made for a brief and uninformative report.

"That is all the information I have Admiral. According to my Chief of Security they were lucky to get out themselves." William spoke.

"And what have you learned from the samples that were collected?" Mitsue asked clearly unhappy at the situation and the lack of information.

"I have my Chief Doctor looking into it as we speak, I'm hoping to have more information by the morning." William answered hoping that, at the very least, would buy him time till the morning to report in again with fresh information.

"What of the Civic?" Mitsue questioned.

"Intact but wether she can be recovered I believe given whats happened is highly doubtful. As you have read by the reports what ever it is has spread through most of the ship and will attack anyone. I believe the only choice is to destroy the ship. Prevent anyone else, even looters or raiders from falling to the trap." William suggested though he could see the Admiral was less than fond of the suggestion.

"Any sign of the cargo?"

"No Ma'am. Apparently everything had been vented into space, every cargohold and airlock had been opened. By who is unknown." Will replied trying to support his suggestion with facts.

"Very well, you are approved to destroy the civic. I want all records, sensor readings and reports sent by encoded subspace to me. The owners will want to know what happened to the ship and crew and why we had no choice but to destroy it." Mistue spoke as she tapped away at her console.

"Understood Admiral." William spoke and to no surprise the link was closed moments later by the Admiral. Will stood up and walked back on to the Bridge. "Commander Bawden, prepare a two Quantum torpedoes, maximum yield. Target is the Civic freighter."

"Aye sir." I replied looking at my console to prepare the weapons. I didn't know much about what was going on but I knew enough to know that if torpedoes were needed, it was never a good thing. "Weapons ready."

"Target the Civic, I have been authorised to destroy the vessel to prevent what ever is on there from harming others." William spoke so others could hear and understand.

"Target locked." I replied as soon as the indicator told me.

"Fire."

What followed was the unspectacular destruction of the civic, the warheads doing what they were designed to do and unleashing directed destructive force upon an object. The civic was torn apart, with no structural integrity field the torpedoes punched through the thin outer hull detonating within and the ship broke apart into thousands of pieces.

"Helm, set a course back to Federation space at full impulse, recall the fighters and engage warp 5 once we have cleared the immediate area." William ordered. However what he'd hoped for being a closed chapter, a tasking completed and a cruise home would not be so. As the Dreadnought turned its large armoured hull to its new heading, that which plagued the Civic, a small part no larger than a fist landed on the starboard nacelle. From there with all the energy flowing through it, it began to grow.
