I Need A Change

2,350 words; about a 12 minute read

Mission: The Emerald Road
Location: Various

Sigh

Jack sat back in his chair and rubbed his face with both hands. Soo much work that never seemed to end and the feeling that he'd gone from a marine to a desk jockey. No marine would be comfortable with that so Jack, needing a change of scenery left his office and headed to the Gym. Not knowing if Acacia was on duty or not he sent a message to her to see if she wanted to hit the Gym with him if she wasn't on shift, he wouldn't mind her company and it would take his mind off the boredom his career seemed to have been overshadowed with.

He'd thought about calling home, speaking to his mother but if he knew her she'd be out with the 'girls' shopping or flower arranging or what ever hobby she took up at this time and the last thing he wanted to do was to call and his Father be there, even at his age the General always found time to add his word into something that disappointed him.

The tiny ping of a message surprised her out of a report that she was writing and Acacia switched screens over to the new one. Did she want to go to the Gym with Jack? Sure! Scribbling down a hasty reply about needing about 15 minutes, she powered through the rest of her physicians surgical report.

When Jack arrived at the Gym he's changed into a short and issue tshirt workout get up. While he waited he drank from his water bottle and began to stretch in prep for some running, weights and what ever else struck him at the time. There were only 2 others in the Gym at this stage but seemed like they knew each other as they were talking on the treadmills.

Reporting was done in 10 minutes, and she headed to the doctors area in order to change her clothes. She however wore the standard-issue Starfleet workout gear, black shorts and a white top striped with blue. Underneath and however she had a bikini and then maybe relax in the hot tub once she was done.

Seeing Acacia walk in Jack smiled. "Well well, look who decided to show up." He grinned knowing he invited her but couldn't argue with how she looked. "You sure you want to be seen with me, I mean, I might cramp your style with all the onlookers." Of which there were only two.

Her step slowed so that the sway of her hip was accentuated and she crossed the gym towards him. When she reached him, her fingers interlocked behind his neck so she could give him a long kiss. "I think I can handle it"

"And what about me?" He asked after the kiss broke holding her to him, feeling her curves against his large combat torn frame.

"Im still coming back for more arent I Colonel?" Eyes glittering with challenge and amusement, she started a set of stretches of her own.

"True." Jack resumed his own stretches before he eyed up a rowing machine, been a while and he felt like something different from the norm of weights and running. "Did I pull you away from something in Sickbay with the invite?"

" I was nearly done writing a report, which is why it took me 15 minutes so I can finish it up. So you didn't steal me away from anything important, there weren't any patients. " honestly she was so used to surgical reports by now that she could do them in her sleep, and she has.

"Got any plans after this?" Jack asked with a warm smile as he set up the rowing machine after his stretch routine. "Just wondering." He looked at Acacia, young, energetic, fiesty and there was him....war torn and broken.

"Nah just an appointment with my bathtub, a glass of wine and my bed. I might even put on a holovid. I was thinking this marine ive had my eye on might join me. I dont know if hed be interested though, in something so simple. "

"Oh yeah, set your sights on one of my troops huh?" Jack grinned. "So should I notice a sudden drop in his ratings if you keep him up all hours of the night?" Not that his had dropped and the nights were well worth it.

"No, I dont think hed let that happen." Eyes twinkling she glanced at the climbing wall. That was her favorite activity.

Seeing her eye the wall. "Go on then." Head tilting to the wall with a grin on his face. "I'm sure he will keep his standards.

Dusting her fingers with chalk, she turned on the antigrav harness point so that if she fell she wouldn't be hurt. "Don't tell me you like to climb?" was her incredulous question as she found a fingerhold and pulled herself up onto the wall.

"Not all of my missions have been on flat ground babe, I've absailed down my fair share of cliffs, fortress walls and buildings in my time." Jack spoke as he slipped on a harness and watched her take the first step up. "Besides, if I fall, I have a medic on hand."

"You'd best not" she muttered as she gazed fondly at him. Stretching for the next handhold, she reached with her foot and shoved herself upwards.

"Yeah? Or else what?" Jack said putting that gauntlet out there. He eyed his next hold and pushed himself off the floor up the wall once space had been made by her ascent.

"I'm a surgeon love, I don't want the memories of me covered in your blood trying to save you." came her response, as she found the edge of the leading platform and pulled herself onto it.

Jack looked up to see where his next hold was going to be, only to see up at her. Her legs parted slightly as she cling to the wall, pressed against it. "Nice view." Knowing full well he was going to pay for that comment later on somehow.

"Yeah, you don't get to see that view very often" she teased him from above, wishing he could see the wicked smirk on her lips.

"I don't have a hand grip wall in my quarters." Jack replied as he followed his way up. "Mind you, I didn't hear any complaints." Taking reassurance following the conversation with Sam about Acacia and him.

"I've found your shoulders work plenty well for gripping on." came the riposte after a titter of laughter about the complaints line.

"Ohhh so thats how its going to be." Just as he'd said, passionate and fiery. Then he took heed of what Sam had said. "Listen, probably not the best time to ask this given we are climbing a wall but uhh...what would you say if I asked you to move in, permanently like?"

Her fingers slipped off the hand hold and she paused in her ascent to process that she'd actually heard what she thought she heard. Her voice was soft, almost shy when she spoke. "You would want that?"

Jack looked up again, he could see right up between her thighs in her shorts, the small gap between her and the wall as if trying to see her face. This was Sam's fault, encouraging him to speak his mind. "It's why I asked, unless being called Coffee in the morning while getting hugged by a morning breath, scruffy marine doesn't take a fancy?"

A giggle echo'd down to him "Hmm, waking up next to my marine every morning sounds lovely. If you're serious of course...I'd like that."

"When am I not serious?" Jack asked. Considering he was a marine seriousness was really all he knew because of the risks involved not being so could cost him his or someone else's life.

"I am sure that i will enjoy finding out." She countered her beaming smile evident in her voice even though he couldn't see it.

"I mean.." Jack started as he climbed up a little more. "You don't have to rush it, Rome was not built in a day but I mean if you wanted it could be a gradual move at your pace." Jack was trying to not pressure her into an immediate thing, the offer was there and out, to be taken at her own pace.

"Aww backtracking when ive already accepted. Does that mean you dont want me to move in?" She knew that wasnt the case, hed already given it considerable thought, of that Acacia was 100% certain.

Jack wasn't in the mood, he was already uneasy because of what Sam said. "Up to you, offer's there." He spoke as he looked at where his next handhold was going to be.

Looking up she saw the bar, hoisted herself up and sat on the platform panting slightly from exertion. "Get yourself up here."

Jack took each move steady, it wasn't a competition, it wasn't a race and rushing could turn into an injury even if its on the hand, finger or otherwise. Eventually though he made it to the bar and climbed up. "Don't see what you like in climbing." For him it was a requirement of the position, part of the job, didn't mean he had to enjoy it.

"Well, the air is different up here. When youre planetside its like a whole different world. " Once he was seated beside her she scooted over and entwined her fingers in his.

"Helps if you are not getting shot at, at the time." Remembering back to one of his early missions where he broke his ankle taking a leap from a cliff face and landing on it hard once the rope caught. "You can blame Samantha for all this by the way. She kinda stood there and held the bag while I whaled on it. It's strange how women say the things we don't want to hear and still its the truth."

"This being the request for me to move in?" She hazarded quietly, her icy blue eyes flickering towards him.

"I'm a marine, Acacia. With what I do, the dangers I am put in, the threats I leap into. When we put on the uniform we know the risks, the green one however, when the fighting gets bad its the green doing the stomping. We don't know if our next Op will be our last and if Sam can find love in the arms of another, another woman no less which totally caught me off guard, then why can't I?"

"I know what you are." She whispered and rested her head on his shoulder. "It scares me senseless that you might be next on my table." Her voice was quiet, even though she was speaking directly into his ear he would have to strain to hear her. "But...what we have is special."

Jack nodded. "Yeah, yeah it is." He admitted to himself even though he knew that there would be a lot of changes and compromises to come, living with someone was totally different to sharing a barracks with a group of trained male and female marines.

Acacia smiled against his shoulder before leaning forward to breathe a kiss on his neck. She'd never had the pleasure of living with someone before now, besides a female roommate. She wagered he would mind not one bit if she wandered around naked.

"Shall we get down?" Jack spoke as he leaned against her. "Oh, by the way, Zan has invited us to dinner."

"Which one is zan?" She asked as she looked over the platform for a good handhold

"Zan, hes the CAG, Lt. Luthar." Jack answered as he did the same. "Pretty much won't find him anywhere else but the flight deck and his quarters, under his craft or with Sgt Winters."

"Typical." She muttered grinning over her shoulder at him. "Is he one of the ones that watched me um..."

"No, no it's not often he is on deck unless he's picking up his partner, Sargent Winters after shift." Jack spoke as he rotated and started his way down the wall again.

"I suppose thats good." Her chuckle floated down to him "Did they want to have dinner tonight?"

"I'll message him later and see but the way he said, its possible." Jack spoke as he made his way down the wall. "Why, are you on duty tonight?"

"Nope. Im just getting a little scraggly." She said softly "I had been planning on putting in a new color."

"How long will that take?" Jack asked since he'd never needed or wanted to colour his hair.

"Im pretty adept at it so not long. Couple of hours. " she smiled at him "of course the more intricate it is the longer it takes.

"So want me to say later tonight or another night?" Jack asked since he gave in to her needs and demands of the hair colouring.

"If i start early, I can have it done by 7."

"Ok, I'll speak to him." Jack spoke taking another few steps down. "Got anything to wear for it if its tonight?"

"I always have something to wear." Came the answer from above and she climbed down slowly, watching him out of the corner of his eyes.

When Jack reached the floor he looked up, then took the antigrav harness off. "Suppose that means its time I have a shave."

"Maybe you can join me in the shower, before you shave" her impish little smile gazed down at him as she hung from the wall.

"You think we are going to get any showering done?" Wouldn't be a first time, nor the last as he smiled looking up at her again. "Getting that view again." The Cheshire cat grin on his face.

"Maybe? Wed have to eventually." Her wicked smile matched his as she jumped down from the wall and landed in a crouch

"Ok, well I'll message him later and see what he wants to do, tonight or another night." Jack said hanging up the harness on the hook next to the wall.
