650 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: The Emerald Road
Location: Marine Gym

*Thump*

*Thump Thump*

"Dropping your elbow again." Sam said as she held the bag for Jack to assault.

Jack had spent the better part of the day stewing, a trait most men engaged in when something bothered him. The trigger? One of the marines mentioned something about Acacia in a not so flattering, vulgar light at what he'd do to her. Clearly not aware Jack was listening. This particular marine was younger, fitter, a new addition. *Thump*

"She could have anyone on board." Jack said between grit teeth as he landed another combo trio. "Passionate...energetic." Another 1-2.

"Maybe she likes the older man." Sam replied. She didn't like seeing a friend all torn up but knew that men saw things that were not there or at the very least made a big issue where there was not one to be made.

"I'm only 3 over here." Another 1-2 pair.

"She can handle herself, she did well enough with your old assistant considering shes medical." Sam spoke feeling the blows soak through the bag into her as she held it. "She's old enough to make up her mind and she's chosen you to be with."

"That is what I don't get." Jack said as he danced around the bag a bit laying blow after blow into it. "Me, of all people. I'm a marine, a dangerous profession, my next could be my last. Who would want that kind of baggage?"

"Live for the now and what is, not what could be." Sam spoke softly. "Consider this, she's younger than you, a mans dream for the most part. Shes wild and fiery, passionate, outgoing. I've seen a smile on your face a few times when you walked in."

Jack smiled. "Good times." He launched a 4 blow combo on the bag. "Really good times."

"She's old enough to know what she's getting into, she knows the kind of job you have, pretty sure she would have considered that before giving chase." Sam said leaning against the bag. "Besides, if shes able to give you that kind of smile, it's a good thing."

"Says the pearl of wisdom now." Jack spoke striking the bag again. "Things going well with Annabelle then?"

"Taking it nice and slow, no rush but yes they are." Sam said with a soft smile on her face. "I will admit it's nice to have someone."

"I still remember when you told me, steeled marine all shy and uneasy, unsure." Jack returned as he struck the bag again.

"It was new, different, something I had not considered." Sam replied tapping the bag to get Jack to resume.

Jack continued going against the bag.

"So, asked her to move in yet?" Sam asked.

"Thought about it, didn't know if it was too soon. Thats not to say shes stayed a few times." Jack spoke as he attacked the bag again.

"I'd heard what happened." Hard to not notice the bruising from what she'd heard.

Jack struck the bag particularly hard, harder than before. It was still a sore subject, one he would not be forgetting. "I don't want to talk about it."

Sensing the raw nerve still exposed Sam didn't persue the topic. "I think you should ask."

"Ask what?" Jack asked still testy over her knowing.

"To move in." Sam replied.

"I don't think she's ready for that kind of chaos. Hardly anything in my quarters as it is and when there is, its messy." Jack said, though he had thought about it a number of times.

"Just needs a womans touch."

"She'd doesn't need me coming home stinking to high heavens because I've hit the Gym or been working out in the Holodeck on some exercise smelling up the place." Jack returned with a few more blows to the bag.

"Like she doesn't know that scent already huh?" A Cheshire cat like grin on her face.

Jack grinned. "Good times."
