Mission:
The Emerald Road
Location: Ten Forward
The mood on the ship was a pretty poor one, Zan didn't need to be Betazoid to figure that out. While they got Vash back it came at a price, but Vash was part of the family and if anything the Dreadnought crew went to extraordinary lengths for family. Heading home and to scenes far safer and more beautiful Zan was in Ten Forward enjoying a drink. There were only a few people in the room so it was peaceful. A welcome change of pace to be sure.
"Can I get you another?" A server asked.
Zan looked up having been pulled out of his moment, gazing to nowhere in particular. He tapped his glass twice and smiled. "Thanks."
"I'll be right back."
Zan was thinking about Amanda, if anything this mission only served as a stark reminder that while wearing the uniform it came with risks and those risks could see a person one day and snuff them out as if they were nothing, not even realising they had done it. He remembered back to when his cockpit was cracked, leaking oxygen and dead stick. It was scary, upsetting, things he wanted to do that would go undone and yet here he was now, still things undone.
Amanda was one of the marines that boarded the ship to rescue Vash and word quickly went round that it was hell on board. A real meat grinder and not everyone got out. A price was paid sure but thats what the uniform sometimes calls to collect. Zan smiled thinking back to the days when Amanda and him first started, the passive hostility that a pilot would date a marine, a flyboy they called him, which was fair, he was a pilot after all. It took a long time for him to be accepted and even then it was more a mild tolerance and the knowledge that Amanda would kick his ass if he hurt her.
The news that went round when they got engaged was generally good, still her fellow marines were less than happy about it, how could a flyboy be worth it and all that jazz so Zan expected a mixed reception. The server returned with a fresh drink, a smile and then left again. "Thanks."
Sipping his drink he was left thinking that through all this the sense that time was precious was even more prevailing, this last mission proved it. He planned to speak to Amanda, life was too short for delays, hang ups, regrets. He didn't want inaction to be a regret later and live life for the now instead of wondering what could have been. Together they had not spoken much about marriage but then work did seem to get in the way alot, it happened and he knew that but that wouldn't stop him talking to her and seeing about putting things right between them.
He had seen Ayla and Mark, perhaps the longest ship side marriage he'd ever seen. Two totally different people, different species, different jobs and they made it work, so if they could, then so could Amanda and himself. He was not sure on kids though, never even came up, but for now he wanted to do right what he felt they had put off.
=^= Computer, where is Marine Winters currently. =^=
The computer told him that she was in the ships Gym. "Of course." Amanda did like to keep in shape and he agreed when they first started dating that he would not get in the way of her career, support her and encourage where he could. Quickly finishing what was left of his drink Zan stood up, gave the server a smile and then left Ten Forward.
