Today was the arranged field trip of the ships elementary school. They sometimes paid visits to the various sections of the ship for educational purposes. Sam had already assigned 6 marines for demonstration purposes. Made safe weapons were set aside and everyone knew so, didn't want kids shooting each other by mistake. There were tables set up for kids to get faces camo'd up and a few things like small hats and badges to hand out and take him.
"Ok guys, they will be here soon. Don't overdo the sparing demonstration, keep it simple. Just want to ohh and ahh the youngsters not frighten them."
First sign of the arrival of the children's school field trip to the Marine Section was the sounds of pleasant yelling of the Aides mingled in with a bunch children's voices all excited to see another department or section of the ship they called home. Then patter of many feet till they came into view. The children in two neat orderly lines with Miss Fontaine in the lead followed by the children, at lest 20 of them in two rows of ten with the Aides bringing up the rear.
"Good Morning, Soldiers," Miss Fontiane spoke to the Checkpoint Marines. "We're here for our field trip to see the Marine Section." She looked at the pad she carried and back at the Marine. "A Major Snyder is whom we're to meet."
The Marine at the desk looked through his pad and nodded then making the call to Major Snyder that Miss Fontaine and children were here. His partner was checking out the teacher and her Aides.
Hair neatly in place, uniform tidy and presentable Samantha left her office to meet the arriving party having heard the children over the comm when notified they were present. The doors opened and stood before her was a pack of eager young children doing what they do best. Yelling, shouting, laughing, touching everything and trying to get the attention of who ever Marine it was aimed at. "Miss Fontaine, Major Samantha Snyder, Marine Executive Officer." Samantha introduced. "Just this way I have a team of Marines already waiting for them."
"Annabelle." Then she turned to the children and let out a sharp whistle, quieting the children as she got their attention. "Lets go children!" She ushered them past the checkpoint into Marine Territory to follow the Major.
The children let out a yell and cheers as they began to herd past the Checkpoint to follow Major Snyder. They were in awe as they saw Marines going about their business as they trooped behind Major Snyder and their Teacher, Miss Fontaine.
"Which one of these children is yours, Major?" Miss Fontaine asked as she walked beside Major Snyder.
"Oh I don't have any." Samantha smiled though blushing at the question. She saw the team of marines ready and waiting for the children. Samantha explained the layout she had set up, demonstrations, equipment they could handle making sure it was all safe. "We have sealed off areas just in case they should wonder off." Several marines stood waiting for the children to come charging forth now that they had entered the main area.
Miss Fontaine gave the nod to turn loose the children. Once giving the word they swarmed the Marines and equipment on display. Annabelle turned to the Major. "You like serving aboard the Dreadnought?"
As any typical single woman, Annabelle checked out Samantha to see what type of competition she had with the single menfolks of the ship. She was wearing a nice knee length sundress, sandals, her hair tied back into a ponytail that was loose and cascaded down her back.
"At first I doubted I'd stay, at the time this ship didn't have a popular reputation but as the years went on my view changed. I enjoy it, it keeps me active, in shape and busy when I need to be." Samantha noticed the once over, her training picked that one up of observation skills. However she felt her cheeks burn slightly, she was of course used to being checked out by the men, came with the territory but another woman!
Just then the children let out a cheer and scrambled to pick up the weapons so they could get the feel of them, drawing Annabelle's attention to the children, "Line up and pass the weapon to the next when done. Joey! Don't point the barrel at Sally!" She reprimanded Joey, a Klingon boy, whose eyes were lit up at being given a chance to hold a real weapon. "The ship does that to a person. Mainly the people who crew it, makes it interesting." She looked at Samantha with a smile.
"Very true." Samantha replied. "Have you yourself been on board long, we don't get to hear much below decks, especially from the civilian realms." Looking around she was glad the kids were enjoying themselves. "In fact I think the most interaction I've had with non fleet is in Ten Forward for a meal and drink."
"I came aboard when they commissioned the dash B." Annabelle spoke smiling as she watched the children showing a lot of interest and asking questions to the Marines that were running the displays and watching over the weapons the children held. "Most of us tend to hang out with each other in our cabins. Whomever has the biggest one is the one that usually hosts the gatherings, but we all bring snacks and drinks to supplement the host in supplying the food. We're rationed just like anyone aboard the ship."
"I've never actually done that." Made Samantha wonder just how much socially she'd been missing out on. "Wow, I guess more a Marine than a woman, gosh thats a terrible thing." Sam laughed.
"Lose the uniform and come on up to the Captain's Cabin. Elizebeth is hosting a social gathering. It's at 19 hundred hours tonight. If you feel awkward in coming. You can come with me. I'm Deck 26 section B, Cabin 238." Annabelle motioned to one of her aides to go chase down Tommy with one of the Marine's Knives. "Will be leaving my cabin at 1830 to go to the gathering."
"Deck 26, section B. Got it." Samantha replied. "Should be an experience I think." Only problem was now she had to find something to wear and her wardrobe was somewhat limited in its fashion selections. "Just have to find something to wear."
Annabelle did another look over of Samantha. "If not, you can borrow something of mine. We're about the same size." Giving Samantha a soft smile, but then two of the students started fighting over whose turn it was to hold the rifle. She darted away to intercede along with the Marine whose job was to keep an eye on the weapon.
Samantha was about to politely decline but Annabelle dashed off before she could. As much as it was a solution to her wardrobe issue, she was not sure if she could.
With the issue resolved, Annabelle return to Samantha side, where she had a good view of the children and Aides. "So you coming?" Resuming the conversation. "Anything will be fine. No uniform though. Cause you're suppose to be blending in."
"Um, sure, why not." Committed now, no turning back. "I'm sure I can find something." I hope She thought. "Should I bring anything with me?"
Annabelle thought for a few quick seconds. "Just yourself." Giving Samantha a smile, taking note that some of the children were losing interest in the Marines and equipment. "I think it's time for us to leave." She gave a signal to the Aides to round up the children, do a quick search for any purloined items.
Just myself, ok, sounds simple enough.
Annabelle got the children all together and cleared to leave. "Okay Children, thank the Marines for showing their equipment to us."
"Thank you!!" The kids chorused out loud amidst giggles and shouting.
Samantha waved to the children as they left easily seeing the relief on the faces of the men who seemed to have been run ragged by the little ones. "Ok guys, pack and rack. Did well today."
