Mission: What Stalks The Night
Location: Security Away Team

Ensign Jack Baker stood on one side of the anti grav sleds of gel, phaser drawn, eyes darting anxiously arounf the otherwise empty room. Since the rest of the away team had left to find the engineering section, leaving just himself and Vonnie behind to guard the gel, the silence had become near deafening. All he could really hear was the roaring of his own blood in his ears and the sound of his heart thumping in his chest. He had no idea what this creature was that Stefan had been hiding from, but it was obvious from the damage it had done that it was not something to be messed with. "I wish they hadn't left us here," he muttered over the sleds in the general direction of his companion.

If all 5'8" of Jack's solid frame was the epitome of anxiety at their current situation, Lieutenant Vonnie Thomas was the very picture of cool, calm and collected. At a very slight 5'2" she was built for agility, not for power, yet she remained still, leaning back against the sled directly behind her as she closed her eyes, listening to the sounds around her. At least, that's what she would be doing if he would stop his infernal shuffling. All she could hear so far was his heavy breathing and his feet shuffling on the concrete floor. "Will you just shut up?" she shot back at him before shaking her head slightly.

Jack gasped again, glancing around anxiously. "Did you hear that?" he asked, his hushed whisper not quite so hushed. "What was that? Surely you heard that sound?!"

With a roll of her eyes, Vonnie pushed herself away from the sled and inching toward the corner closest to him, her footfalls silent on the concrete despite her standard Federation issued boots. "The only sound I hear," she hissed through gritted teeth, "is the sound of you acting like a damned baby now shut up. Are you trying to draw attention to yourself? Are you trying to lure that thing out so it can claw you like it did those walls?"

Jack's face paled visibly as she spoke. "N..n..no," he stammered, backing away from her. "Do you think it really made those marks?" he asked, almost afraid of her answer.

Vonnie grinned and took another step toward him, an evil glint in her eye. "Oh, I do," she said softly, her voice holding a slightly menacing undertone. "Go and look at them? Go on, go look. See those claw marks? See the darkness in the deepest indents of each mark? That's dried blood, human blood from where it shredded everyone else before trying to get to Stefan."

She watched as he gulped hard, her lips turning up in a grin. "Think about what their last minutes would have been like?" she continued coldly. "That slightly sweet metallic scent of blood lingering in the air as blood spilled over the floor from some lifeless corpse no longer identifiable because the creature shredded it. I imagine it probably started with the tongue, ripping it out to stop them screaming... then plucking at their vocal cords as if he were playing an instrument until the only sound they made was the rattle of imminent death as they started drowning in their own blood."

Jack started backing away from her, his eyes wide and fearful. Fresh from the Academy he knew that there would sometimes be bad things to be seen while he was on duty, but what she was describing was not just bad, it was horrifyingly unimaginable. "Vonnie, stop," he pleaded.

"But that wouldn't have been what killed them," Vonnie continued as she took another step toward Jack. "Look at that wall Jack, look at it. That creature, where ever it is, has razor sharp claws. Imagine as it plucks your eyeballs out, one by one, eating them for a tasty treat before it starts on your skin, slicing through your chest with its nails... one strip, then another, and another..." with each word she raised her hand, making a downward slicing motion with one perfectly manicured red fingernail. "Then peeling your skin away while you're still alive. You can't see what's happening, but you can feel it, you can feel every slice, every dice, every ounce of flesh it peels away from you while it drinks your blood as if it were chianti."

There was the sound of a whimper as Jack continued to retreat. "Be quiet," he begged, his eyes wide, sweat beading across his forehead, his palms so sweaty he almost fumbled his phaser.

"By the time it's finished with you, death will be a mercy as it finally plunges it's steely talons into your chest and slowly rips out your slowly beating heart, feasting on your organs like they were liver and fava beans." Vonnie held her hand up above her head, licking her lips and them making slurping sounds as if she were sucking down a noodle.

At her final gesture, Jack took two steps backward, almost stumbling awkwardly. In his haste to retreat from her, he stepped back firmly colliding with a large support pillar behind him. His eyes widened fearfully until they almost seemed to bulge out of his head, the strangled scream from his throat only silenced by the stream of vomit that spewed forth as he dropped to his knees, retching almost violently.

Resisting the urge to laugh, Vonnie instead shook her head. "Get up and get back to your post," she said with disgust as she turned on her heel and started walking back to her own side of the gel sleds. "Or I'll leave you here alone and let the creature have at you."
