Mission: What Stalks The Night
Location: Away Team

Jack ran.

He wasn't even sure where he was running, but he ran anyway. Despite the sweat he could feel dampening his skin, he was chilled to the bone. His breathing was laboured and his chest hurt, but if he knew that if he stopped he would die. He had to find the others, that was his only chance.

Rounding another corner, he stumbled over his own feet, almost landing on his knees on the ground before he managed to regain his footing. Behind him he could hear the creature coming after him, the scurry of movement on the floor, the occasional screech of a claw along the wall, the sound almost like nails raking down a blackboard, sending shiver after shiver down his spine.

Then there was silence. No sounds of movement, nothing behind him, no sounds at all other than his own gaspy breaths. He turned, taking a few steps backward, glancing around the corridor behind him. Another step backward. Another fearful glance. He could feel the bile rising in his throat again as his skin prickled with cold.

There was no sound when the creature dropped from the vent above, razor sharp claws slicing across the back of Jack's neck as it landed on the ground behind him, the blow severing his spinal cord.

Jack's felt all control leave his body just half a heartbeat before he fell backward, collapsing to the ground like a limp doll. His terrified screams echoed around the corridor as his eyes widened, watching the creature advancing.

The creature lifted Jack from the floor, its wounded prey, bleeding, moaning, unable to fight. It threw Jack against the wall with enough force that the sound of breaking bones could be clearly heard over Jack's cries. As his body crumbled to the floor again, the creature slashed toward him, tearing open part of his shoulder, chest and neck, leaving bone visible, tatters of flesh and uniform hanging.

At the sound from behind, the creature turned slowly, a steely gaze resting on Bianca and Vic who been drawn into the corridor by Jack's screams.

It took only a second or two for Bianca to assess the situation. There was nothing that could be done for Jack, if he wasn't already dead his injuries were too severe and they would not be able to save him. "Get back inside!" Bianca shouted as the creature fled back into the nearest vent.
