New Faces and Terror Beyond

Samantha was in her office following the night with Annabelle. It played on her mind heavily to the point where most that saw her noticed something different about her, distracted, distant. Normally this could be shrugged off as a mood or stress but when Samantha had missed her scheduled meeting with Colonel Frost it was then she knew something was amiss.
***Door Chime***
"Come." Samantha spoke looking up from her desk that had scattered upon it a score of reports and evaluations and one cup of now cold Coffee.
Jack wondered where Samantha was when the time came for the scheduled meeting, it was unlike her to miss something like this. Taking the choice to take the meeting to her he stepped in when the doors opened. "Major."
"Colonel, sir. I'm sorry I missed our meeting everything has be...." Sam tried to explain.
"It's ok Sam, relax." Jack took a seat. "What's up?"
"Nothing, just busy with reports and evaluations, new faces and platoon assignments." Sam replied as she tried to tidy the chaos that was her desk.
"That's not what I mean Sam." Jack returned. "You have been distracted, even your assistant has noticed it and you are not one to miss a meeting with me without notifying me."
Sam knew Jack was right, every single point of it. She had been distracted and heavily so this morning. She dropped her shoulders in defeat and sat back in the chair. "I wouldn't even know where to begin."
Jack sat back. "From the beginning and go from there."
Sam looked around desperate for something, anything to leap out and cause a distraction to draw the moment away from her. Fate had other ideas though. "I um.....very recently I've had alot on my plate."
"If you are overworked you can always tell me Sam, you know that." Jack spoke wondering if that was the case. He admitted to himself that he'd not considered that as a possible situation.
"It's not that, it's more...personal." Sam explained trying to counter Jack's train of statements. "I...met someone."
"Good for you." Jack smiled happily. "So, go on, lets hear all about em?"
"We met last night." Sam spoke slightly flustered at what she thought as appearing weak and easily flustered. "A get together really of people, civilians mostly. The Captain's Wife was there."
"I think I heard about some kind of gathering, how was it?" Jack asked, keen to hear everything.
"It was ok. Can't dance to save my life but I've known that since graduation." Sam spoke then continued. "Met someone there, they invited me actually. I had to replicate a dress and everything."
"Knowing you it was all reg issue uniforms and combat gear right?" Jack joked.
Sam nodded. "So I changed and together we went to the gathering." Sam broke a small smile as she recalled it mentally. "It was nice, friendly, casual. I felt out of place but supported."
"So.....stop dancing about the issue, what's he like?" Jack asked eager to know about this mystery person.
Sam blushed, dropped her head to avoid looking at him, even went so far as to fidget with her fingers in her lap. "She."
"She....wow. Go on, who is she?" Jack asked, surprised sure but Sam was a grown woman, if she liked women then who was Jack to judge.
"Annabelle Fontaine, shes a civ teacher." Sam's voice was soft and she managed to look Jack in the eye. "What?"
"Nothing, I'm not sure what you are expecting. I mean sure it's a surprise but hooking up with a man or woman doesn't change anything in my eyes. If Annabelle makes you happy then go for it girl. If she breaks your heart though I may have to make her disappear." Jack smiled.
Sam's face unamused as it was reflected her view on that statement.
"I'm kidding." Jack laughed. "Listen, Sam. I don't care if you hook up with a man or a woman, I really don't. If she makes you happy then you go for it. Yes I'm surprised, but you always kept your private life so private and I didn't want to intrude. My view of you has not changed if that is what you are worried about, I just didn't know you were into women is all."
Sam shook her head. "Me too."
"Listen, if she makes you happy then grab it with both hands. Explore it, see where it goes. Sure there are risks but you should be used to that by now wearing green. Just take it as it comes, see where it goes and don't rush it."
Sam felt guilty when he said that. After the gathering Sam went back to Annabelle's quarters, and stayed the night. "Yeah."
"You are a grown woman Sam, able to make your own calls, judge what suits you. If Annabelle fits the bill then she fits. Just because you are my Exec doesn't mean you need my permission. Hell, bring her along to marine gatherings if you want, I'll be happy to meet her."
"I don't think we are quiet ready for that yet." Sam answered shyly.
"You are worried about your image arnt you?" Jack asked.
"I don't know, maybe, sort of." Sam replied since it was an issue she'd been combating since she arrived at her office.
"Sam seriously. Nothing will change, hell nothing should change, you and Annabelle are both adults, mature and capable. If anyone has issues with what you two have you let me know and I'll stomp on em."
Sam laughed slightly amused by the mental image of Jack stomping on someone. "Thanks."
"Well, I'll leave you to it, think on what I've said and don't let what others think bother you. In our line of work good things are hard to come by so when one appears, grab it with both hands." Jack stood up and smiled. "I'm happy for you." He walked out, the meeting would wait as it was nothing urgent and probably Sam would need some time to herself to think.
