Mission Briefing

Posted on Mon Oct 17th, 2016 @ 10:46am by Colonel Jason "Jack" Frost

1,761 words; about a 9 minute read

Mission: New Faces and Terror Beyond
Location: Observation Lounge

With orders in hand, objectives laid out Captain Havrelli had to action the men and women under his command. The mission overview seemed general enough for a humanitarian style mission, assist and aid, establish and secure, all of which seemed at least easy enough for the crew of the Dreadnought to handle. That in mind however Ra decided that it would be good for some of the junior officers to get their hands dirty and acquire that ever valuable commodity, experience.

=^= This is the Captain. Colonel Frost, Major Snyder, Lt's Bradshaw, Beckett, Patrovski and Luthar and Staff Sargeant Winters report to the Observation Lounge. =^=

Having received a notification from Doctor Patrovski informing him that Commander M. Bawden was unfit for duty and that Commander A. Bawden was acting as carer for him it meant that he needed to alter his immediate command structure.

Something he'd deal with once all the players were assembled. Meanwhile he waited after cleaning his glasses.

Charlie was already nervous about taking over for Bawden while he was out of commission. Then the call from the boss man, she was really nervous now. She walked in and saw that she was the first to arrive, "Reporting as ordered sir."

"Lieutenant." Ra greeted turning his chair towards her. "Please, take a seat." His glasses perched on his nose to aid him seeing clearly.

Xavier made his way to the Observation Lounge once he got the call from the Captain. He'd just managed to finish off the notes into the medical file of Commander M. Bawden regarding his condition. Sending the Captain the required notifications was simple enough and he made sure to include a treatment evaluation plan as time went on so that the Captain knew what was going on and when it would be going on.

When he arrived he was surprised at start to see that he was the third person to arrive, a young woman who he recognised but couldn't quiet put his finger on the name. He knew it would bug him until he was reminded of what it was. "Captain, Lt." He picked a chair towards the centre side of the table.

Zan walked in not sure what to expect but glad he was not the first, he hated when that happened. He saw that the Captain was gazing out to the stars, a young red headed woman and Doctor Patravski, Patrovski...something like that. He smiled at them and took a seat observing the Captain.

SSG Winters strode in, wearing full combat kit plus underneath the body armor was skintight Evac suit. She looked like she just finished eating steel nails and ready to spit them out at the first person who looked at her wrongly.

Winters nodded to those presence, sent a wink in Zan's direction, knowing he was still having problems with the newest batch of fighter crafts. She gave Charlotte a nod of acknowledgement as she took the seat against the wall, leaving the seats around the table for the Officers. The chair creaked under the weight of her kit and EVAC suit. "Excuse my dress. Running anti-intrusion drills with the platoon." She gave a wave to Xavier. "Hey Doc!" With easy familiarity having served together for a serious length of time. Her helmet hit the floor next to her chair with a clunk. She took note that a lot of Very Senior Officers were missing, sending an inquiring look at the back of Captain Havrelli.

Jack walked in not sure what to expect, he'd yet to have anything about a mission briefing involving the marines which normally SFMC would have at least sent him something, but nothing. He was hoping that the Captain would explain to him just whats going on. When he entered saw a group of junior officers and the Captain and not the senior officers like usual. He wondered what this was all about but to cover it he smiled and took a seat. Some face he knew, others not so much but that would change in time.

Sam entered just behind Jack and at first everything seemed to be in order until she took into account the people involved. She smiled in greeting to those that took notice and she took a seat beside Jack. "Do you know what this is about?"

Jack shook his head but kept his eyes on the Captain, new, strange fellow but he figured he would see how the man thought with what he was going to say.

Sam nodded, if the boss didn't know then something was up that the Captain was keeping to himself until now.

I walked in with a PADD in my hand, I honestly expected the Captain to want a status update on the engineering systems but when I saw the other officers present and the mix of senior and junior officers my heart slightly raced thinking this was an evaluation, and we junior officers had fallen into the same boat. I took a seat on the side where the other juniors were and not sure what to expect I waited patiently.

SSG Winters came to attention when Colonel Frost entered, followed by Major Snyder. Since the Captain was there. She refrained yelling out 'attention' when Frost entered. She return Major's nod with a nod of her own and took her seat against the wall. She nodded to Lieutenant Bradshaw when he entered. This was going to be interesting.

Ra turned to view the table of assembled officers before him, some he'd already met, others not. "Thank you for coming." He began. "I'll get the pressing matters out of the way first. Commander Bawden has fallen ill, his Wife has taken leave for personal reasons and to take care of her Husband. In light of this Colonel Frost you will fill in as First Officer. Major Snyder will take over marines for the mean time."

"Recently I received word that a colony over a few hundred people was established little over 24 months ago and recently suffered a major earthquake." Ra activated a holographic view of the colony, surrounding areas and information relating to the region. "While the earthquake itself was distant yet powerful it has caused extensive flooding. Coupled with the damage to the colony from the quake the flooding has all but destroyed the colony and forced its population into another area."

The display scrolled to another region, one that looked far less hospitable. "They have been forced here, they have carried what they could and erected some shelter but the region is known to contain hostile wildlife and they need basic medical aid and infrastructure. We are going to provide it."

The hologram changed to schematics. "Lt Bradshaw, you will begin fabrication of these shelters. Major Snyder, Sgt Winters I require several teams of those trained in jungle combat and survival. Lt Beckett will handle local security while all this is going on, we don't want the locals getting worried. Doctor Patrovski, you will assemble as many teams of staff possible due to at least in the short term a lack of suitable medical facilities or provisions. CAG you will provide heavy lifting and transportation for this operation."

Jack was slightly surprised by this sudden turn of events. He hoped that Mark was alright as the two had become good friends both before and after he left the SFMC. Now to discover he was filling in as First Officer left an uneasy feeling in his stomach. Jack was not a Bridge Officer, he was a marine in the thick of it or training others to be such but to be on the bridge of a Starship while his troops were down below didn't sit well at all.

"Captain, what sort of wildlife are we expecting, is there any information at all at what we might expect?" Information was key here especially if lives were on the line. She hated going into a mission blind and any information she could get would help them do the job they had been assigned.

SSG Winters listened carefully, letting the officers at the table speak. She took notes and began to write up her mission profile and planning. She smiled as this was going to be a hunting trip of the 4 legged kind with animal level of intelligence. Predators verses predators.

First reaction was for Jack to give out orders for the troops to get ready but he was no longer the MCO and it took alot to reign himself in. There was no doubt in his mind Snyder was up to the task and perhaps this would be a good step in her career, he could only hope it went well.

Ra pulled up what information he had. "All we have to go on is the initial planetary report. The report indicates a varied mix of large and small wildlife present but noted predators observed include creatures resembling lynx's, bears and other large wildlife. The report is not overly detailed in that area as it was originally planned for mining and production purposes." Ra continued with everything else of note. "As we have seen tectonic instability is present, weather has bouts of sun but predominantly wet with upto storm gale winds."

"We can use the ships transporters to beam the materials down, from there I can use shuttles to lift things in to place. If we take enough we may also be able to provide shelter for our people and a mode of transport if they need it." Zan spoke putting his worth in. He knew mobility would be a factor especially for the ground teams, injuries were bound to happen when two hostile elements clashed.

"I will need to take equipment and some can not be beamed down so they will need transporting by shuttle. They are cell cultures for basic immunisations." Xavier spoke up laying out the need for special care for some of the equipment.

"Any logistical issues may be forwarded to Colonel Frost. In the mean time while we are on route all efforts should be made to ensure that we are ready to deploy at a moments notice. Lives are at stake and time is precious, we can't afford to tally." Ra looked at Lt Bradshaw. "I'd like to coax as much power to the engines as possible Lieutenant."

It seemed to him that everything had been taken in. "I'll have everything we have including the initial planetary report forwarded to each of you. In the mean time we have work to do so let us get to it. Dismissed."
