Preparations

502 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: New Faces and Terror Beyond
Location: Bridge

Jack was not sure about all of this, first thrust into the First Officer's position and now having to send him marines on a mission without him. He was a marine not a bridge officer. Still however orders are orders and for now he had a job getting things prepared for the away mission. He knew straight away that Major Snyder and Winters would be all over getting the troops ready but that still left Engineering, Medical, Security and Aerospace to contend with.

He hoped Mark and Ayla were ok, he'd not heard much about what was going on but thought about dropping by later to see for himself.

He pulled up the planetary report and gave it another in depth read to fill in blanks and answer at least to himself some questions that lingered in the back of his mind.

The colony was a break off from another planet formed almost two decades ago, it seemed that belief was at the core of it. One side cited the need to remain where they were and develop themselves while the other believed that the stars held answers for the future. Intelligence reports indicated that secretly a ship was built and everyone that believed departure was the best course of action packed into it. There was mention of other ships but that was all and Jack had to wonder if there were other far thrown colonies out there in a similar or soon to be similar situation needing help.

The schematics for the temporary shelters seemed ideal for what they had in mind, Captain Havrelli must have preapproved the choice himself prior to the briefing. The downside however was that some parts were heavy, sure a team of marines could put them up but the marines were off on some wildlife hunt. Jack wanted to make sure that communications and sensors were set up quickly. He knew all too well the importance of information and it would greatly help the away teams if they had live feeds for weather, lifesigns and more right to the fingertip.

It would be tight to keep security buttoned up with so many colonists, especially since they had just been uprooted by force and nerves would be frayed as a result. Jack hoped that if they saw Starfleet trying to help then it might placate them, but he had doubts.

Beaming people to the surface would take almost an hour, medical supplies would have to go down in time with a shelter going up as a medical bay while the rest would take a couple of hours.

Then came another question. Did they want our help? It seemed religion was a factor in the lives of the colonists, would they see this as some religious quest? A trial? Would they see outsiders as a threat or would they see them as guardians and welcome them? The more he thought about it the more he wondered just who or what was the risk....the wildlife or the masses?
