Mission: Marine Ball

Penelope Haskell had been waiting for a long time for something like this. Ten years she'd been dating Wolfe Sean and she was hoping that he'd propose to her at any time. Surely he loved her, that was absolutely clear, but whether he was scared he'd lose her (or her him), nothing had happened... Yet. But also in those ten years, there hadn't been such an opportunity as what was going to happen this evening: A by-God Ball. The Marines having a Ball (always with the capital B) was a tradition that went back a long way, but Wolfe (and she) had never been on a ship that was going to have one, until now.

She finished brushing out the tangles in her hair from the curlers as she snuggled into the plush robe that she had decided on for after her shower and after she'd put on another essential. Makeup would come later, probably just before she put on the dress she'd kept hidden away for this day. Whenever she'd shown up among the Marines, she knew the eyes had been on her, the jealousy when she always found Wolfe and greeted him enthusiastically. Part of her absolutely loved that, the rest knew that it was for his eyes. Of course, she was also the most popular reporter on board Dreadnought with a solid following across the Federation as a whole. And she was all HIS.

She finally left the bathroom and made her way out to the living area and saw her boyfriend, her slight smile widening as she did. There was always something just so exhilarating about seeing him, whether on the ground in a combat zone, or just the every day interactions with him, "Well, Wolfe, the easy part of getting ready is done, and we still have a couple hours before we're due to get there. When were you planning on starting to get ready?" She teased him, knowing it'd be easy for him with his dress uniform.

Wolfe had brushed, de-linted and thread checked his uniform 3 times already, his dress shoes were almost to a glass finish, everything was ready but he still had to try it on. Wolfe didn't like his dress uniform much, few experienced marines did, it was one of those uniforms that felt tight in one place or another, or too short in the sleeve or leg but forgotten about for years and then to suffer for leaving it far too late to be altered. He noticed that Penny seemed to have preparations well in hand though, if anything he suspected she could make up, dress and shoes before he was ready given her profession.

"Yeah, I'm going to shower, shave, scrub up so I look like a marine and not some vagabond you picked up."

He had little doubt that Penny was going to turn heads tonight, he knew that he was the lucky one, getting the girl well out of his league. He grabbed a large towel, his razor, cream and walked to the bathroom.

"Well don't take too long." Penny smiled at him as she collapsed onto the couch, making sure that the robe was fully around her and grabbed the nail polish bottle that she'd pre-placed before taking her own shower, "There's still a couple things I want to talk to you about before tonight." She gave him her bright reporter's smile as she shook the bottle and unscrewed it to start on her toenails. Even though they'd be hidden from view in her shoes, it was always best to be thorough.

One shower, shave and mostly drying later Wolfe stepped out of the bathroom with the towel wrapped around his waist, bare chested and still slightly damp as he entered the living room as she was still painting her nails. "Much better." He spoke looking like a proper marine again with a fresh clean shave.

"So, what's these couple of things you mentioned?" He asked as he sat in one of the single seats opposite Penny.

"First off, what do you think of these?" She wiggled her toes as she was finishing applying the polish to the last of her nails. The polish was made up of two shades, a rose and a gold and clearly had been formulated to not let the colours mix when shaken, giving somewhat of a random pattern when it got put on and dried. A fair bit of her right leg was also visible from where the robe had fallen off of it.

"What answer would you like, the partner answer, marine answer or the bloke answer?" Wolfe replied as he looked at the painted nails with a smile.

"Yes." Penny giggled at the look on his face, beckoning him over with one crooked finger, "All of the above and any other answer you have to give."

"Well, as the partner, I'd say they match your radiant beauty that only your eyes could rival. As a marine I'd say, nice stems." Hinting at her mostly bare leg on display. "As a bloke... well let's say if I were into feet I'd be good for a while." Wolfe answered.

Penelope snorted in laughter that she only let loose when around him. Around others, she had to present another face entirely, her professional face, the one that everyone trusted. With him, she was just herself, "C'mhere." She told him, grabbing his hand and planting a kiss on the palm, "I like them all, honestly, the second one the best." She grinned at him, "I love you Wolfe, I hope you know that by now."

Drawing closer so that he sat next to her he smiled as she kissed the palm of his hand. As a marine those hands had done things, some things he wasn't proud of, yet Penny loved him all the same. Duty and honor didn't hide shame, it distracted from it with medals and commendation, but those hands remained the same once the pomp and circumstance faded.

"I love you too Penelope."

Wolfe didn't use her name like that often, but when he did, it added a cord of seriousness to the sentence it accompanied.

She rested her cheek on the point of his shoulder with a contented sigh. She never got tired of hearing that, but it was also almost a sore point. She was always direct and to the point when needed and here was one of those, "We need to talk about out future just a little bit. I'm not worried about formality or the like, but I was wondering why we haven't had a baby yet. I've not been on anything for oh... the last year or so, but I think I'd like to do something like this... God, I hate to put it this way, but... Just in case."

There was that word, the B word, that one word that caused some men to run for the hills, some marines to dig trenches and hole up in them and others to embrace it. Wolfe knew what she meant, it was like a whole conversation in a few perfectly understandable, logical sentences. "I really wish I had a proper answer for that." Her question made perfect sense to him, it was logical, reasonable, down to earth.

"I get what you mean, the just in case, I do." Penny wasn't being morbid about it, it was a perfectly reasonable question. "And I'm not going to give you some deflecting answer. Simply put, I don't know, and that's a crap answer I know. You are right though, I get where you're coming from." He paused. "I know I've been busy with duty, but that's not a reason to put you on hold."

"You're right, 'I don't know' IS a crap answer." Penny said, no vitriol in her voice, the smile still there and softening the rebuke because she knew it was a rough subject to bring up, "But it's an honest answer and I'd rather you be honest with me than just tell me what I want to hear." She made her next move look like it was almost effectively random, kicking her feet up over the end of the couch as she pivoted on her rear end to place her head in his lap looking up at him, her light blue eyes framed by the curls she'd spent nearly an hour putting in. There was a hint of pink down by her legs, but she knew he'd not see it... Yet. "And I know that the thought bothers you... Wanna share?"

Sitting back into the sofa his fingers laced through her hair. "I guess, it boils down to fearing what kind of father I'd be. Will I be a good one? I know that's not a good reason not to have a baby." Yet it bothered him. He didn't want to be a bad dad, a deadbeat that got killed in the line of duty leaving Penny and child alone. "You know, I actually thought about resigning, to remove the threat and danger from my life, so I could focus on being what you want me to be."

Her manicured eyebrows furrowed up at him, "Everyone has that fear, it's in the nature of being a parent. Who knows what kind of mother I'd be? The answer is that we won't know until it happens. WE won't know, Wolfe, because it's not just me, it's not just you. I know I say 'just in case', but that's just the worst-case scenario, and no, you are not going to resign your commission." She reached up with one hand to caress his newly-shaven cheek, "Do you know what you look like when you're talking about your Company? You're already a father to what? A hundred troops? I don't think you've ever looked in the mirror after you run through an exercise that has gone really well, how happy you are. You're right where you want to be, need to be. You're going to make a great division CO one day, and I'll be right there with you."

"Can you imagine, if i got you pregnant, you did your broadcast, I'd be hunted across the federation sectors." Wolfe spoke. "Assuming the marines don't kill me first, you saw how they looked at you when you were in that red number, and not just the men mind you. Penny from the news, knocked up by a marine..."

Penny bit her lip before she mentioned that if he'd just propose to her, then it would be more 'normal', but she'd promised him previously that she'd never push him on that matter. That had been part of Year Two with him because she knew how scared he'd been about that. "Everyone would just be jealous! Hell, your troops are jealous of you already and if they tried to take me from you?" She made a really horrible karate chop well away from him, "Not a chance, Jarhead!" She giggled again, "I've gotta break their hearts somehow, though, or else they may get ideas!" Her hands went down to her abdomen and she played with the sash that kept the robe closed, wondering if it were time to use her trump card.

"They already are jealous. They don't have hot news hosts dressing up real fine and deliver them lunch. Hardly anyone got any work done after you left." Wolfe answered, but she was right of course.

"I just didn't have time to put on something less dressy," Penny said in a whiny voice, "And as Special Correspondent Penelope Haskell, I have a reputation! I bet that if I'd shown up in sweatpants and a t-shirt they wouldn't have been saying nearly as much. Besides," Her smile went sly as she finally pulled the bow she'd tied the sash into apart, "You know I like looking good for you."

"Yes, yes you do. I'm grateful for that." Even Wolfe had to admit, Penny looked stunning all the time to him, no matter what she wore. He leaned low and kissed her forehead, smelling the scent of the shampoo she used in her hair.

"And tonight is going to be no different. You're going to have everyone out there jealous of you on the dance floor, because that's what I have forecast for tonight's weather." Her smile turned sultry, "And for the entire night, I don't want you focused on what I look like on the outside, because when we get back home, I want you to be focused on what's underneath." She finally pulled back the robe to reveal the pale pink semi-corset she had on, reaching down one thigh to pull up one hem with a single finger, showing what she wasn't wearing at all.

Eyes went wide, following that finger, there was a momentary brain freeze. "Ab..absobloodylutely, yes ma'am, not a problem, you got it." If his eyes were cameras he'd have run out of picture storage several times already.

Penny licked her lips as she got the reaction she was hoping for, letting her arms slip out of the robe as she slid off the couch and turned to face him in his utter immobility, straddling his legs as he sat there, "If I didn't know better, you like what you see?"

"Uh yeah, yeah I'm pretty sure that's exactly what is happening." Penny looked amazing in ALL the right ways. "So uh, knowing you're wearing that under your dress tonight is going to be a challenge to say the least." He spoke as she straddled his legs.

"I don't have to, you know." Penny teased him, "I could just not wear anything under it. Or I could just give you a preview of what I have planned for after the dance?" She leaned in to give him a most unchaste kiss.

"Because that won't be in the front of my mind and make me a bumbling mess." Wolfe spoke. "Hottest girl on the ship, bare under the dress. Almost like we're teenagers again."

"And I know I'll never forget that night at the senior prom." Penny whispered in his ear, "After I told you what I wasn't wearing, we almost didn't get to the hotel room fast enough for you. I don't think we want a repeat of that now, do we?" She wrapped her arms around his neck and leaned back, "What do you think?"

"We broke the bed, left a mark on the wall, tore a bed sheet and we were both aching for two days." Wolfe smirked. "Good times."

"So... Before? After? Both?" Penny smiled maliciously at him from her perch on his lap,, "Whatcha think?"

"After, but tempting otherwise. Besides you have to be the girl of the ball, can't do that aching or... messy. Besides, I just showered, I'm clean." Though, he was still tempted, he didn't want any distractions for her doing her thing, being noticed.

She leaned in and outright took another kiss, but backed off after that, leveraging herself backwards and off the couch and to her feet again, "Then you'll just have to take this off after." Penny grinned as she turned away with swish of her ass to tease him with, "I suppose I should go put my face on and then the dress, you should... Compose yourself before you put on your uniform." She wiggled her eyebrows as she turned back to face him.

Wolfe watched her leave. "Going to be the death of me." He mumbled softly, still, wasn't a bad way to go though. He composed himself and then walked into the bedroom and pulled his dress uniform out of storage. "You enjoyed every minute of that."

She sat at her vanity, applying just a light coat of makeup, then would come the eyeshadow, mascara, lipstick and finally the dress itself, "Every single time." She admitted to him, "And from the feel of it, you were ready to have a bit of fun yourself. But, I'll behave, I know how important it is to you Marines that you have the best and most well behaved girls on your arm."

"Well behaved, after that?" Wolfe smirked. "Just wait till we're home, I hope you don't have any broadcasts lined up tomorrow." There has to be some payback for that.

"Promises, promises." Her eyes glittered in the mirror at him, "If you can make me reschedule my walk around the hanger deck, I'll let you pick the subject of the replacement broadcast." She put the blush down and picked up her mascara wand.

"If I can make you reschedule, there won't be one. You want to fight this battle I won't stop till I win it." Wolfe started to dress himself, a huge grin on his face.

She stuck her tongue out at him in the reflection and focused again, brushing out her eyelashes with the dark goo to make them pop, then reached for another wand and applied the pink and gold glitter to them and a brush of it on her eyelids as well. The red lipstick coming next and rapidly and finally she turned around to face him, pursing her lips to blow him a kiss, "Last chance to make me have to redo this." She teased him as she played with the hem of the negligee, then flounced over to her closet, her very large closet, and digging through the far edge of it to pull out a garment bag.

Wolfe reached over and groped her ass firmly and smiled. He was about to fire off a reply when he saw the garment bag. "How long has that been in there?" When did she get that?

"It's been with us since the Monaghan," Penny grinned widely at him shaking her rear again, reminding him of an assignment three years ago, "It's been waiting for it's time to shine, not one I can really wear on screen, it wouldn't go well with the lighting." She placed it on the bed and opened it, the silken pink of the dress fading to a burnished gold at the bottom, the waist of embroidered roses and the golden heels sitting at the bottom of the bag, "For a special occasion."

"I don't know what the opposite of a Valkyrie is, but you wear that and the female population on this ship is going to be swiftly reduced from the resulting girl on girl chaos." Wolfe spoke, an amazing dress, stunning even, wrapped onto the hottest and most sexy girl on board. No woman liked to be showed up... but Penny just made it soo easy.

"Succubus, my dear, you're thinking of a succubus." She leaned up and planted a gentle kiss on his lips, light enough to not transfer any of the lipstick, then adjusted the negligee as she bunched up the hem of the dress, if she was careful enough, she wouldn't even smudge anything, "Can you hold the hem for me, sweetheart? I forgot I should have put this on first, I blame you, you riled me up." She winked.

Wolfe grinning stood in front of her, holding the hem of the dress. Only when she started to put it on, with her hands distracted did his own hands roam. "Oops." They roamed some more finding her chest. "My bad." He smirked. "Such a difficult dress to handle."

"Pity poor you." Penny crooned, loving the attention from him, adjusting the arms as he finally let it down, his fingers tracing their way down from her chest to her stomach and lingering briefly before touching the top of her thighs and finally the touch vanishing. For a moment she wanted to just take it right back off and screw the Ball, but she restrained herself, instead flowing towards the mirror and adjusting the fabric of the negligee underneath the dress so that it wasn't visible at all, "Heels?" She held her hand out and he obediently handed them over by the straps and she did her balancing act to put them on as well, then turned to face him, "And how does it look?"

"Like you're going to a beauty pageant and victory is assured." Penny looked stunning, if he felt she was out of his league before, she was in a whole new galaxy dressed like that. "You look.....breathtaking." and she did, every inch of her.

"And since I'm going with the most handsome Marine Captain on my arm, I think we're a matched pair." Penny reached out for his hands with both of hers, squeezing them as he gave them to her, "We're going to show your Colonel just what arm candy is supposed to look like and give him the example of what a Marine is supposed to look like." She released him and straightened his collar a bare fraction, "And they can all suck it."

"You can do that later." Wolfe finished getting ready, looked himself over in the mirror, brushed his shoulders for hairs or lint. He stood before the mirror looking at Penny, she was his everything, yet sometimes, looking at her right now, he knew he was lucky.. insanely lucky.

"Oh, I will, you have my word on that." And it was a promise she'd keep. A reach over to her vanity and she took the matching hairpiece and perched it on the side of her head, the delicate gold filigree butterfly alighting right above her ear. One of these days, he'd realize that she wasn't going to abandon him, ever. She'd loved him since their junior year of high school and she loved him no less after all these years. "Now, my sweet, let's go make everyone else wish they were us."

It wasn't often, but when it did, it worked. Hearing Penny say that, to make them wish they were them was like a little devil on his shoulder daring him. His face twisted slightly in a sinister expression. "Yes, let's do."
