Marine Gala

5,967 words; about a 30 minute read

Mission: The Emerald Road

The annual marine gala was up to now something Jack had no interest in. It was not because he didn't have anyone to go with because he'd often get invited by female marines in a single state as he was. At least until Acacia turned up. Acacia was much younger, wild, adventurous and she showed how she felt. In person she was a beauty, intimately everything was dialed upto 11, at home she made him feel young walking around in one of his shirts.

He looked in the mirror at himself in a uniform hed not worn in years. His best mess and dress with lanyards, medals and ribbons. It looked almost alien to him from his usual appearance and yet hoped, as he left his quarters to collect Acacia it was not too much.

Acacia was putting the finishing touches on her hair and make up. Glittering pins held her hair into a cascade of curls, neatly framing her face. A smoky eye done in silver and pink made her sapphire blue eyes even deeper as they were lined and accentuated by eyeliner. Black ballet flats were hidden by the cascade of the dress as it flowed from her hips to pool at her feet as she sat by the mirror. Pressing her hand to her belly she was astonished at the butterflies that jumped there as she slipped deep pink crystal studs into her ears. Was she going to be too much?

The sight of a dressed up office especially at this time of year was common place so he didn't seem out of place and he saw other officers similarly dressed up as he made his way. He couldn't help but remark how some officers just seemed to appear younger and younger, one Captain looked like he was not even out of his twenties for example. He entered the building Acacia was housed, took the lift to the second floor and after taking the wrong turn and having to back track he found himself standing at her door and knocked on it.

The knock at the door startled her out of her reverie and reminded her that she still had to put on her perfume and her lipstick. Less than a drop of her scent mixture, that was formulated for her specific body scent went behind each ear and on her left wrist. "You can come in Jack, but I'm not quite ready." His entry would give him the perfect view of the intricate back of her dress and her curls to match. 3 narrow bands of black fabric crossed her bare back at a slight angle. The 4th tied to the strap holding the dress up in the front and cascaded down her back in a gradient from black to hot pink.

The door opened and Jack stepped in, greeted by a view of beauty, almost art like in its grandeur. It came as no surprise to him that her appearance paled his own but he didn't care. It was worth it. "You look incredible." Using the reflection of the mirror on her.

She turned a glowing smile onto him and was struck dumb by just how good he looked. Her lips formed the word 'wow' but nothing came out while her eyes swept over him.

"Nothing in comparison to you I'm afraid." Jack replied with a smile and shift in body. "It's been a while since I wore this last. I'm amazed it still fits."

"Wow.... I dont have words to express how good you look. Wed be very late indeed if i tried to show you. I don't feel like i deserve to be on your arm. " the words were quiet but the nerves were clear in them. Dragging her eyes away from the gorgeous man behind her she chewed her lower lip.

"Well...I did see a young Captain walking solo, I'm sure I can go find him if a Colonel is too much." Jack joked as his eyes roamed her.

"I prefer men not boys" Acacia quipped as she applied a rich plum color to her lips then over that a silvery gloss. She hadnt hidden her freckles, and she took inventory of her features before rising. The top of the dress fit like a second skin, hugging her curves perfectly.

"I think I have discovered that." Jack smirked as he looked to the floor to hide his smile. "I've received word that my parents will be attending, last minute additions."

"Your....parents?" Her skin went pale under the freckles and she bit the lip shed just colored charmingly.

"Yeah...." Jack was not looking forward to it, the last discussion he had with his Father did not go well and now he was meeting him face to face, no screen to shut off, holo-communications to flick a switch on. While it would be pleasant to see his Mother again as she was always supportive of his choices his Father however was more....strict on his expectations, which he made clear when Jack passed up on the step up his Father had provided him.

"Are you sure you want them to meet me....I mean I..." she cut herself off and blushed a bit. Shed been about to say she loved him which was not a leap she was ready for. "Are you alright?" She asked as she looked more closely at him. He had that look deep in his eyes that shed come to associate with pain.

"Yeah, last time I spoke with my Father we....didn't see eye to eye and have not spoken since." Jack replied looking up at her. "But we should get going otherwise you wont be able to meet my Mother and I know she'd love to meet you."

A timid little laugh escaped Acacias lips. Raising her fingers she caressed his cheek before finding his gloved hand and squeezing it. "Lead on Jack, where you go I will follow.

Leaving the room and then the building the walk to the gala venue was just across the courtyard. As expected security was present so palm scans were required for entry, no doubt an effort to keep uninvited guests out. When they walked through the doors the room opened up to a vast area of tables, dance area, a large bar which no surprise was crowded, elegant flower decorations and a dais which would no doubt be used later in the evening. "Wow, talk about attending."

She tried not to let her mouth drop open too much at the sea of Marines and Marine dignitaries in the room. She don't know much about the rank structure but I did notice that her colonel was one of the higher ranks in the room. A flicker of amusement pass through her, when she watched them all salute him when he came in.

Jack kept a look out for his parents but failed to see them in the mass of white uniforms, coloured dresses or black suits for the occasional non male marine with a marine partner. Tables had been set out for dinner and they had been assigned table 6 if the information he recalled was accurate. "Lets go find our table, before we grab a drink."

"What number is our table" she had softly requested so she wouldn't forget. A Drink however seemed like an excellent idea, and would calm her nerves. Acacias fingertips stroked over his forearm

"6 apparently on the invitation." They walked around table to table first table they came across was 23, the next was 19 so at least they were heading in the right direction. 15, 12, 8 and lastly 6. "Here it is." Now Jack took a moment to look at the name cards of those sitting. The star on one name tag stood out, only Generals have stars so there was hardly any surprise when the name read Maj.Gen Alan Frost, O/C 27th MID. "Oh joy...." Jack lifted up the name tag to show Acacia.

"Someones idea of a joke or merely ease of seating i wonder?" Acacia voice asked in his ear calm but amused. Her fingers entwined with his and squeezed. Her sharp eyes found her place setting and smiled at the elegant looped calligraphy.

"Probably both no doubt." Jack replied as he leaned into her, feeling her against his arm and side. "How about that drink?"

"Id like that..." she was no small amount nervous that she would be meeting his parents soon. She doubted a general would be late for this gala. "Um...anything i need to be aware of?"

"About?" Wondering if she meant family or the occasion.

"Anything" she stretched the word out a bit to include everything. Not knowing what to ask to further clarify what she wanted to know." .

"Its hard to say anything about Dad beyond hes exactly what he believes a Marine should be, it was like he was born for it. Mother is as sweet as they come, loving and caring, she will like you. Dad.....thats a tough one to guess." Jack explained as they made to the bar. Surprisingly the unwritten rule of not lurking at the bar was still in place as people got a drink and then walked away for fellow patrons to get a drink too. "What would you like?"

" what do they have that's non-alcoholic, I don't want to make an idiot of myself quite so early in the night?" Acacia asked smiling at both him and the bartender who was staring at her." Any specials?"

The bartender showed them the list, Jack decided to numb the nerves early since his Father was attended, Jack Daniels. "What can I get for you miss?" The bartender asked coming back to her a few patrons later.

"How numb are you planning to get?" She asked her voice pitched for him only as she perused the drink menu.

"Just this one for now, you're a Doctor I'm sure you can administer something if I need something stronger." Jack spoke as he held his glass making the liquid within swirl around the edge.

She chuckled softly and affected a fake country accent for a moment. "I know how to cure what ails ya'"

It was a good thing Jack was not sipping his drink at the time she said that as his mind took that somewhere else entirely. "So what did you decide on?"

A pleased sound emerged from deep in her chest and she nodded. "A mint lime sparkler please." The bartender scrambled to do her bidding and she simply shrugged. Her eyes were all for her Marine, a bit nervous she brushed her fingers against his seeking reassurance.

"You ok?" Jack spoke putting his arm around her slender, well defined waist thanks to the dress. Secretly he was not looking forward to meeting his Father, not seeing eye to eye was a mild to say the least understatement.

"Ive never been to anything like this before." Acacia answered "Starfleet doesnt do galas like this usually."

"Every year for us." Meaning the marines. He looked round at the gathered officers and ratings, decorations and medals on each, lanyards on some like himself.

"I might enjoy seeing you so dressed up..." she smiled just for him, before turning to receive her glass from the bartender. It looked like a mojito and smelled vaguely of citrus. She wondered if she should stoke the fires in him early or not...and tell him just how incredibly sexy she found this uniform.

Jack lead her away from the bar so to not clutter it, around them groups had formed, conversations started. They were greeted as people passed, smiles exchanged as they walked towards the table and then fate took a twisted turn. "Lt. Colonel Jason Frost." The name caused him to stop in his stride. "Commander detachment U.S.S Dreadnought." Only one still called him that.

"General Alan Frost, OC 27th." He turned and there stood his Father flanked by his Mother who beamed smiles from behind the General. "Mother." Jack smiled "This is Lieutenant Acacia Thomas, Surgeon on the Dreadnought." He turned to Acacia, the look plain that already first blood had been dealt. "May I introduce my Father, and my Mother Professor of History, Angela Frost."

Acacia was glad shed gotten a long lasting lipstick for at the rate she was chewing her lower lip in anxiety shed have none left at all. Squeezing his hand briefly, Acacia looked squarely at his father then over to his mother. Smiling her most charming smile she extended her hand to whomever wished to greet her since they were right next to one another. "Pleasure to meet you both."

"A pleasure." Alan greeted with a very firm, typical of marines handshake. The Mother however was far more gentle, beams of smiles and admiration at the pair before her. "I see you decided to attend for once."

Jack knew this was coming, with his duties aboard ship it often kept him away and even when they didn't he found something to occupy himself, even if that meant volunteering for a shift which was always welcome especially to those wanting to attend but rostered to work. "That dress looks lovely, doesn't it dear." Angela spoke, silence from Alan.

"Thank you ma'am. Starfleet doesn't have many functions like this where one can get dressed up to the nines. Between you and me I'm loving the opportunity to not be in Starfleet dress blues. " the warmth of her affectionate smile fell on Jack, and she extended her fingers for his.

Jack took her hand in his own, if that wasn't an indication to his parents he didn't know what was. "Shall we sit?" He spoke offering as with Acacia he walked to the table. 'This is fun already. 'He whispered to her.

Mischief flickered in her eyes as she nodded in response to his quiet words. She took the seat he pulled out for her with a quiet "Thank you Jack." It took only a moment of looking to know that his mother was going to seat herself beside her.
Taking the first sip of her drink that had been in her hand since the bar she wrinkled her nose against the tingling pops of the carbonation in it. It tasted like mint limeade, and brought a smile to her lips.

"Its unfortunate business what happened to the Dreadnought, you have served with her long Jason." Alan asked.

"I have, but I enjoy it." Slightly irritated over the just of Jason, over Jack. "I have been there a while true but I have a detachment on board that I have worked with, molded, honed to just how they should be and I want them."

"And you dear, a Surgeon." Angela spoke interrupting the passively combative men.

Acacias eyes had been flickering between Alan and Jack but were drawn to his mother when she spoke "Yes ma'am. My specialty is trauma, but mostly aboard the Dreadnought what i get is routine. "

Angela leaned closer. "So, tell me about my son." Hinting that it was obvious the two were a couple even if they didn't come straight out with it.

Affection warmed in her eyes again as her glance flickered his way. "I don't know what I can tell you that you don't already know..."

"Oh, I have not seen Jack in many many years since he joined the Dreadnought, so Im sure hes changed a great deal. Besides, I see how you look at him, you must know something." Angela spoke while the two men spoke.

Her cheeks pinkened and she looked at his mother with a soft expression on her face. "I know that he is one of the most honorable men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Not an ounce of judgement for me, well....just the once but i deserved it then. Forced him to be the Colonel instead of Jack if you catch my meaning. "

Angela giggles with a wide smile. "So how did you two meet?" Acacia was nothing like what she expected to be her son's type of woman.

"I was on the Remler array, which was where the dreadnought came to get its detox and refit. He found me in the Forward lounge and we had a drink. It came to a head though when I got transferred to the Indy and we realized that we each took the others bag. I wish i could have seen his face when he pulled out my bra instead of a bdu shirt. " her eyes gleamed wickedly.

"Oh I bet that was something." Angela replied warmly. "You know, you are the first girl hes every brought with him anywhere." Unaware that she was the first girl to stick around longer than a day or two.

"Im not like most girls." Her smile was gentle and absently she reached out and entwined her fingers with Jacks.

"Oh, well now I am intrigued. Go on." Angela seemed fascinated by this woman Jack brought with him. Slightly disappointed Alan couldn't keep things civil with his son.

"Most girls look at him and see a uniform, a conquest, then they see his scars and they run. I see him as a person, and the beautiful thing is getting to know the man..."

"Yes the scars, he refuses to get them healed but it must be a male thing and its what he chooses to do so I support it." She spoke. "So how long have you been together?"

"6 months give or take." Acacia smiled a bit , chewing her lip as she tried to do the math. She didnt address the scars or the reason she thought he kept them, for she didn't want to make his mother cry.

"And yes dear, they have always been that way with each other. Alan only wants whats best but Jack wants to do things his own way. Wants to make his own stand." Angela remarked as she sipper her drink. "So, living together, apart?" The motherly interrogation questions continued.

"We have separate quarters but he hasn't asked me if i want to live with him. And what may i ask is so terrible about just letting Jack be Jack. "

"Alan has his own view on things, being a general, you may have noticed he called him Jason, not Jack." She spoke looking past Acacia to see the pair of men still coldly talking. "Alan is very particular, everything in its place, everything has an order to it. Jack is a constant reminder of something he doesn't control."

"I did notice that, and I noticed how he doesn't call him father. " her voice had a hint of bitterness to it. Jack seemed particularly tense and her fingertips rested under the table on his knee.

"Its always been difficult between them, Alan was away a lot when Jack was growing up and the only real connection between them has been the service." Angela answered.

She wondered in that instant what jack would be like as a father and a flutter of nerves shot through her belly. She imagined that he would not tell his children that they could not follow their dreams. "What was he like as a boy?"

"Oh, dear. Jack was a bundle of energy, always on the go. A fighter, didn't back down even when the odds were against him. He was always helpful, around the home, studied hard but as he got older he became more focused." It could be seen that Angela was recalling pleasant and fond memories.

"Youll have to send me a picture of a young Jack." She beamed at the idea before glancing at the two men. She turned an ear to their conversation to ensure she didnt need to step in.

The conversation between Jack and Alan however was one they had had numerous times before, only difference was the content it focused on. Ever since Jack declined Alan's offer of a star and his own command he felt that he was throwing away a valuable opportunity. Now Jack had attended the function with Acacia, an unknown as Jack had never mentioned her before so began to question her involvement. "So tell me Acacia, what's your involvement with the Colonel?"

"It seems somewhat juvenile to call him my boyfriend." She commented with her trademark little smirk up at Jack. Her fingers darted out to caress the sliver of flesh just visible between his sleeve cuff and the cuff of his glove. "But we've been seeing each other socially for right about 6 months."

"How did you meet?" Alan asked darting to the next question in no doubt a long line of them.

"Now is not the time for an interrogation." Jack spoke.

"I'm just wanting to know about the young woman with my son, are Father's not allowed such?" Alan spoke displeased that Jack butted in.

Acacia chuckled deep in her chest and breathed the words "I've got this love." so only he would hear. "We met in the forward lounge on the Remler array, when the Dreadnought limped in for repairs. I was on the medical staff there."

"Go on." Alan was eager to listen as he reserved judgement, a glance to Angela saw her displeasure of his actions but this was just one of many times Alan had crossed swords with Jack.

"He caught me daydreaming about what life on an exploration ship would be like. Life aboard the Remler Array was a litany of the same basic things every day. He was a breath of fresh air..." she turned her eyes to Jack's and they warmed significantly as she gazed at him, before she looked calmly back at his father.

"I see." Alan spoke as he listened to her. He could see Jack was not impressed with his line of questioning. "I will get us some drinks." He stood and departed leaving the three of them alone.

"Why am I not surprised that nothing has changed." Jack spoke.

"I know dear, I know." Angela replied trying to sooth the situation.

"Would you like me to tell him to shove off? " she asked him quietly- though not quietly enough that his mother couldn't hear her words.

"No because that would only make things worse." Jack resigned himself to knowing that his Father was not going to drop this quietly or easily.

She leaned up and kissed his cheek softly "Why don't you dance with me then. He can't pester us if we're on the dance-floor, and we won't be the only ones..." gesturing with a raise of her chin towards the couples that were already dancing, some well, some just swaying to the music.

"Sure." Any chance to escape the wrath of the General was worth taking, and the distraction would be worth it to be with Acacia in her arms, his hands on her in a moment of enjoyment as they danced.

"Have fun you two." Angela spoke with a beaming smile.

The music slowed as they rose, and went to find a place on the dance floor. "I forgot to ask if you know how to dance" Acacia admitted softly as she slipped her hand into his gloved one. "But any escape is better than none right?"

"Yeah." When the music started Jack held her close, his hand on the small of her back as she held his other. "I'm sorry you had to go through that with him."

"I'm not bothered by it. He's going to corner me and do it again, when you're not around to object I can tell." beaming up at him she raised a soft hand to caress his cheek "I can handle fancy pants over there, I promise."

"Alright." Not that he doubted her, just that he didn't want to talk about it as part of him nagged it was a mistake for attending or even staying when he found out that his parents were attending.

"Close your eyes Jack" she whispered, her voice soft and soothing as she rested her fingertips on his arm. "Take a deep breath" with her as close as she was to him, what he would smell would be her subtle perfume and the notes of sweetness of the berry and pomegranate scent of her shampoo that lingered in her vibrant magenta curls.

Jack took a breath as he inhaled her aroma, she was right though, eyes closed and deep breath brought him a measure of peace if only it would last until his father returned from getting drinks. "You sure you want to get involved with me? Means putting up with constant judgement from him?"

"I've lived with judgement my whole life, your father doesn't phase me one iota. You're going to have to do better than that to get rid of me." her smile was clear in her voice as she continued "Besides, Imagine what I must look like to him, next to you. "

"I don't want to think about it. Hes probably already deemed you as unworthy of me or a distraction to my career." Jack replied. "I don't want it to be like that, you're not a distraction at all."

"Well good thing he doesn't get to make that decision then isn't it? The only one who is able to dictate the course of your life is you." Nose pressing to his pristine uniform she sighed happily.

The music played and together the pair swayed and rocked in unison. "So, you can see yourself long term with this old war torn marine?" He whispered to her.

"I...I...happen to love this old war torn marine." she swallowed hard an resisted the urge to chew on her lower lip in anxiety. A casual 'love' in conversation was one thing, but this was a declaration, and she'd never said it before. "So...that sounds just about perfect to me."

The swaying stopped, looking down at her slightly as he held her to him. With but finger and thumb he lifted her chin just enough that his lips could meet hers and upon them place a tender kiss with not a care in the world who was watching or what they thought.

Acacia could feel the gazes of the other in the room on them, and she knew from the sudden quiet that it was not something they were accustomed to seeing. It was heady, the feeling that rose in her as he kissed her there on the dance floor. "Wow..." she breathed when they parted.

"I don't hear that often." Jack smirked taking the single worded compliment for its value. "Though I know of a purple haired young lady that seems to have bagged herself a Colonel, rough around the edges but shes buffing them out."

"Pink. We're pink now don't forget." She twirled a curl around her finger "But she wouldn't have him any other way than how he is."

"You do know how to turn a head or two don't you." Jack didn't even want to think about what his Father thought of the ordeal.

"You should have seen it when i went from my natural hair color to a wild dip dyed burgundy with black tips. Not only did I turn heads I dropped jaws and had an academy instructor walk into a tree. "

"So should I keep an eye on my marines for any neck injuries?" Jack spoke as they resumed the gentle sway to the music. "Mother likes you by the way." If that was not obvious enough.

She snorted "No but you might have to watch out for black eyes. Im fiesty, didn't you know?"

"Fiesty, yes I know as I do recall you wearing one of my shirts, bent over in panties. Had to admit that was a view to wake up to." Also remembering that he called her Coffee and tried to nuzzle her neck for the effort.

Her giggle sounded in his ear, before she rested her cheek on his chest. "That was a very good morning. Xavier teased me all day because i couldn't get the dopey smile off my face."

"You know, not only should you do that more often, but next time, negative shirt." It was one of the things he loved about Acacia, she was bold, outgoing, wild, she was not afraid of her body or to show it off to the man she wanted. She made him feel young, desired and wanted, free and invited to relax and let go.

"Just wait till you see what I've got on under the dress love." She teased gently as the music slowed and then stopped. There was gentle applause, as the crowd dissipated for drinks.

It took a second or two for that comment to register, then the realization, then the grin. "Oh really. I can't wait." His mind already playing over the various things she might have on. Taking the hint the dance was over and returning to the table it was obvious that Angela had been having words with the General about his conduct by the wrinkled brow he wore.

That look warmed her all the way to her toes, and she chuckled softly and her fingers entwined with his so she could squeeze his hand while he escorted her back to the table. Settling down with the quiet swish of her dress on the chair, she smiled at Angela who was looking a bit teary. She cocked her head to one side and then it dawned on her that Jack must not ever show affection to others in front of his mother.

"You two looked beautiful." Angela spoke with a smile. Alan however said nothing as he sipped his drink. It was hard for Jack to keep his cool, his Father always judged him, pushed him and sometimes pressured him. Jack was not like his Father but Alan refused to see or accept it. A marine does as hes told, Alan was a General, Jack a Colonel.

"Breathe" she whispered for him only as she blushed a rosy pink from his mothers compliment. "I've always enjoyed dancing, don't get to indulge much anymore but it is a treat."

A few choice glares from Angela hinted to her Husband that she wanted to dance, to give the two some time alone. The Gala would go on until the early hours of the morning but Jack doubted they would stay that long if it was going to be this awkward with his parents around. "I'm sorry about him. Hes not changed since the last time we spoke."

"Sometimes parents totally miss the boat where their children are concerned. Mine were so controlling, they didn't let me out of our unit until I was 8 or 9. " her eyes followed his parents and her smile returned hesitantly when he saw the way he kissed her hand before pulling her close so they too could dance.

"The General doesn't miss, if he even thinks that he carpet bombs everything." Jack whispered as they sat at the table.

"Now now Jack you know he means well." Angela spoke.

Jack gave her the questioning look as if to doubt her comment.

Acacia slid her fingers into his hand, and squeezed it gently "Maybe we should step outside to let you both cool down?"

"Yeah, air is getting a little stale in here." It was plainly obvious as to what the cause of that was or more importantly...who.

Her gentle fingers entwined in his and gently tugged him towards the balcony. The cool air of the night made her smile, goosebumps erupting on the bare skin of her back. "Meaning well isn't the same as doing well is it?"

"When it comes to him, no. Unless he controls every aspect of something, in his own orderly way and style it will never be up to scratch." Jack answered annoyed at his Father.

"Imagine what he thought with me on your arm" a peal of laughter escaped her as she rested her cheek on his shoulder lightly.

"Listen, I don't care what he says, what he thinks. I've gone this long without him controlling my life and I'll be damned if I let him do it to us, to you." Jack spoke turning to face Acacia, that look of seriousness in his eyes, the tone of his voice.

Eyes gentling, she traced her fingertips over his medals and medallions as if seeing him truly for the first time. Straightening his collar she used that gentle tug to bring herself flush against his body and press a gentle kiss to his lips.

One hand went around her to her bare back, the other hand rising to the back of her head as she kissed him. Such a simple act yet right this moment seeming to calm an otherwise chaotic sea within him all thanks to his father.

The kiss inflamed her and she chewed on her lower lip as they broke away. "We shouldn't get too carried away, here and now. " her whisper was breathless and he could tell she was a bit warm under the collar.

"Yeah, maybe you are right." Yet the feel of her amazing body did wonders in helping calm him. He also knew sooner or later they would fave to face his parents again, at least to say goodbye. "Want to stay some more, or..." Trailing off, giving her the choice.

"You've never been here before, we should stay and enjoy it. I'll handle your father" she smiled at her a steel in her gaze that has never been there before.

Hardly one to argue with logic like that. Jack knew it would be a waste to let his Father ruin the night especially considering this was the first time he'd attended a function like this. "Yeah, alright."

Her smile was bright as she gazed up at him "Come on, lets go back inside. Show him you haven't been scared off by his pettiness and reassure your mother some."

"Yeah, alright." Jack answered as he turned to once again face the doors that they had walked out of, his arm out to her, a deep breath....he was ready.

She tucked herself back into the crook of his elbow and squeezed gently to show her support of him.

The pair walked back in and it didn't take long for them to be spotted again, it seemed Alan was geared for war giving the look on his face and Angela gave a look of surrender, it seemed she'd tried her best. "Looks like you're up." Seeing the parents walk towards them.

Turning back to his father her eyes blazed with as much defiance as he held anger in his. She was more than ready for anything Alan Frost had to throw at her.

"Your mother and I will be taking our leave." Alan spoke. "I suspect we will not communicate for some time."

"Possibly." Jack spoke in reply, knowing that may very well be the truth of it. "It was good to see you both, enjoy the rest of your night." It was taking a considerable amount for Jack to remain...polite.

No, why would you communicate with your son. Acacia thought bitterly as she chewed her lower lip. She couldn't see Jacks face but she could feel his tension.

Angela gave Acacia a hug, then Jack in turn before the two turned. No surprise that a way was made for the General towards the exit, but it still left a bitter and sour taste in Jacks mouth.

"Dance with me marine" she whispered both command and request in one quiet sentence.

Jack watched his parents leave, he knew it would end like this, an attempt at control and once again a war with his father. "Sure. Lead the way."

A tiny giggle answered him "Leading is your job love."
